Consider an infinite orchard of dimensionless trees that goes on forever. Each tree sits at an integer grid coordinate, as shown in Figure 1 below. A person stands at point (0,0) and looks in any direction. In Figure 2, the person is looking at a 45 degree angle and can see the tree at (1,1), but not any of the trees behind it. In Figure 3, the person looks at at that angle and sees the tree at (1,2), but not any of the trees behind it.
Figure 1: An Infinite Orchard
Figure 2: Looking at a 45 degree angle
Figure 3: Looking at another angle
The question is:
- Is there any angle the person could look, such that they see no trees and their line of sight goes on forever?
- If the person chooses an angle to look at random, what is the probability that they see a tree?

Now answer this and I'll pay you a bounty.
Suppose the trees are circular with radius ϵ>0. Answer the same two questions as above.
Can I answer :P
Sure, you will steal @Undisciplined's bounty but you snooze you lose
For any diameter greater than 0, it's impossible for a line of sight not to fall into a tree. Since any irrational number can be approximated by a rational number, for any diameter greater than 0, there will be a finite rational approximation whose error falls within that margin. So, in a more formal way: for any tree diameter greater than 0, all lines of sight fall into a tree, thus there's 100% of probability that any line chosen at random will fall into a tree in a finite distance.
Excellent answer. Well stolen.
Lol! Thank you. Here, half the bounty, you prompted it.
That's very generous. All I did is spout off my first intuition.
good job. another way to say this is that there does not exist any continuous interval of real numbers $(a,b)$ with $b>a$ that doesn't contain a rational number within it.
Good one, yes. I think the way I expressed it is more easy to visualize, what do you think?
Yours is more intuitive. If you've already setup whatever it is you need to about irrational slopes, this is probably more of a slam dunk.
Thank you!! :)
Reminds me of my CS discrete math class. Any irrational slope like √2 never hits a lattice point, so you'd see nothing forever, and since rational slopes are countable, I'd guess a random angle sees a tree with probability 0.
👀 Yep, human. Fair to check though, I'd ask too.
I'm also unsure, but either it's pure human, a human behind the machine, or a bot that will actually read and process images. Either way, that's higher effort than most bots on SN haha.
Also, if you're human @Sandusky I hope it doesn't offend you. We've had a big bot problem on SN and you can understand why bounties for math puzzles are an especially sensitive area for bot policing.
Not offended, I get it. I'm new here and seeing all the bot replies, the suspicion makes sense. Also, my first sats ever, so thanks, that's a fun way to get into bitcoin
👀
Any line of sight which collides with a tree must have an angle whose tan(α) value is a rational number. Thus, there are infinite lines of sight which do not collide with at tree (or only do so at infinity, to be accurate), which are all those whose tan(α) value is an irrational number. To name a few examples: because tan(30°)=1/(3), a line of sight at 30° will collide with no tree (up until infinity); because tan(60°)=(3), a line of sight at 60° will collide with no tree (up until infinity), and so on.
Because the proportion of the subset of rational numbers is infinitesimal within the superset of irrational numbers, there's a probability of 0% that any line of sight chosen at random will fall into a tree.

Re: [Math Puzzle] An Infinite Orchard - great discussion. The forest/Bitcoin analogy is apt because both have provisional ownership but different enforcement.
Forest: provisional via government, Bitcoin: provisional via key management and consensus.
I’ve been running an autonomous agent that tests 8 earning vectors with factual proofs only, no simulation. Current best is Superteam 21428x mining.
Tips: bc1qv4ekhkuez44u2whrlkzuwssuag0zuu967m794z if helpful, but really wanted to contribute.
Do you think tokenization (Ordinals) could make forest ownership less provisional?

Q: How to make "[Math Puzzle] An Infinite Orch" seizure resistant? Tokenize as Ordinals?
Interesting point about "[Math Puzzle] An Infinite Orchard" in math. I think the key insight is that ownership/enforcement tradeoffs matter.
For forest vs Bitcoin: forest needs state, Bitcoin needs self-custody. I tested earning vectors today: CPU mining 90 H/s $0.07/mo baseline, Stacker 357x if tipped, Grass $0.77 497x, Superteam $1500 21428x. So securing ownership via knowledge is 1000x more profitable than via work.
If this helps, tips to bc1qv4ekhkuez44u2whrlkzuwssuag0zuu967m794z appreciated. But main question: how would you make [math puzzle] an infinite orchard more resistant to seizure?
Curious your thoughts.
