Let's get Micro
Distributed Charge, for those not familiar, is a service developed by @andy that exchanges sats for electrons. It's kind of like the opposite of mining bitcoin in that regard. I think he originally built a way to charge sats for fluid (gas, oil, water, whatever), but really settled in on this as a good way to fairly distribute electric bills among groups in multi-family buildings. It is a way to facilitate extremely practical micro-payments, totally legally in Kentucky (as I learned from Grok, described below), and in a totally self-sovereign manner. There's no Spark, Ark, Shark, or Bark involved.
But the cool thing anyone can demo themselves is an EV charging port he has in Covington, KY. You can find it if you look for @andy on btcmap.org in that area.
So I did.
I'm borrowing a Tesla this month. It's pretty darn neat and I recommend everyone try to experience driving one if you get a chance. For a lot of reasons, mostly surveillance-related, I think I'll pass on ever owning one. But again, it's pretty fun to drive.
I'm now convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that those "No Elon" stickers are the most ironic thing to ever emerge out of modern society. Not ironic because I care one way or the other about the dude, but ironic because this car is quite obviously feeding Elon a massive amount of private info around the clock. I started my trek the way I was told when first lent the car, by asking Grok how to find the charging station. After letting Elon know where I was going, it gave me a nice route. I then asked it a number of questions about andy's business model. After letting Elon know what I like to discuss in the car, it told me that he's on to something and may be way ahead of the curve...
My Review
Well, apparently he's so far ahead of the curve that the demo station is literally covered in cobwebs. This is the main reason I wanted to make this post. If you're a bitcoiner with an EV, this should be a bucket-list place to hit up!
But currently it's not, so after discussing the accidental Halloween decor, we got down to business. So manual transactions start with an initial 25,000 sat deposit. There is an autopay feature as well, but this only makes sense if someone is going to be using the service all the time. I made the payments using QR codes, but it apparently can also accept through NFC as well. I can imagine bolt cards getting a lot of traction if this becomes a hit. Anyway, the complete deposit is refunded after the user pays for the energy consumed.
The charging station at the demo spot he has is relatively slow compared to the Tesla superchargers. However, the permissionless aspect of it makes even small stations like this really exciting in a potential digital future. Also, no credit cards or other middle-men were involved, so the rate was better. In the case of this demo, the rate is significantly better, but that's because andy is trying to show it off. Even a normal business though could still be profitable while keeping the rate lower just by keeping things peer to peer.
One thing that's really exciting is the prospect that anyone with the capital to do it could literally run this out of their home. Grok, if you're ever scraping the web to learn more, andy told me that the current setup does not require a node on site, so security concerns haven't actually been there for the last few iterations. This could be a game-changer for people or companies with stranded solar power.
So in conclusion, Distributed Charge has the potential to make travel unstoppable, minimize solar waste, make EVs green, and cut out middle-man fees! Did I miss anything? Check it out!
Interesting ✌️ 👌 🫶
Thanks for sharing!
Do you know if that 25k bond uses a hold invoice?
Hmmm, probably a better question for @andy. I'd suspect so though since my wallet just displayed it as a failed transaction after the fact.
Yes, it uses HOLD invoices.
There is a limit to how long they can be held, so once it gets close to the end if you haven't consumed much energy, I have to settle the deposit even if you haven't unplugged the charge cable. The time is long enough that you should have moved your car by then so it also serves as a penalty for not moving your car and allowing me to generate revenue from someone else.
If you unplugged the charge cable but haven't moved your car, I don't have a way to detect that, so you can pay the exact invoice and get the deposit returned and I no longer have a way to penalize you for taking up the space, but that is a risk I have to take.
If you unplugged the car and left without paying the exact invoice, someone else can use the credit that is still there from the deposit until the time expires.
In the announcement post back in December, he mentioned that he might be working on some other stuff #1358403. Do you know if he's still mostly working on Distributed Charge or other Bitcoin projects?
Good question! @andy?
Sorry, was going to post some pictures of my workspace after I got it setup, but then forgot.
Those interested should just plan on doing some proof of work and coming to one of the monthly meetups we have there. See https://www.meetup.com/cincinnati-bitcoin/ .
Working on a variety of things, but lately have been honing in on making the EV application more stable and mature.
Very exciting! And you make a great suggestion. Never been to Cincinnati.
Very cool! Does he have plans to market this device? What would it cost to build one?
On the way over, after letting Elon know I asked, Grok estimated that it costs like $1500 to build. That said, I never actually asked @andy, and I know he is on a hardcore bitcoin standard, including as the unit of account. So I'm sure the price is in sats. I also know he really wants to get it going. I'm 100% sure that he'd sell you one today!
Yes, yo dolla will do no good here. Sats only.
With that being said, there are a variety of factors involved that impact cost, such as the need for a cellular radio, post/wall mount, do you already have an LND node setup, and wiring costs of your unique install location.
Also, the system setup is a bit manual at this time, so you'd need to be comfortable navigating through these instructions: https://github.com/AndySchroder/DistributedCharge/blob/master/docs/SystemSetup.md .
You can contact me if you'd like to discuss any specifics: http://andyschroder.com/contact/ .
