Stopped at a food truck in New Mexico for lunch today.

It was my first encounter with a Square terminal in the wild and I enthusiastically tapped the Bitcoin icon.

But I couldn't scan the QR in any way. The server tried cleaning the dust, tried multiple angels due to light reflections.

Nothing, not even a generic QR code scanner would pick it up.

So I paid for my tacos with fiat.

What wallet did you try paying with? They use standard bip21 from what I can tell.

Pheonix, but nothing was picking up the QR code.

That's weird. I can confirm that Phoenix works with Square terminals I tried.

Did you try scanning with your phone's regular camera? If it picks it up, you can just copy and paste the invoice into Phoenix.

You can use a QR code scanner app like Binary Eye, which I've found does better in certain difficult lighting situations and for other challenges. Then copy the LN invoice and paste it into your LN wallet app.

Also, sometimes you might be too close, so try slowly moving the camera further away. Or vice-versa.

I used to have a shitty phone with a shitty camera, and hardly ever could get a successful scan using a wallet app, or using the phone's camera app even. But scan from Binary Eye and ... 60% of the time it works every time!

I’m visiting the US (SF) and have paid at Square Terminals with Bitcoin a few times with Phoenix with no issues!

I know the feeling! I'm surprised it didn't work even though you saw the Bitcoin icon.

In general I've been pretty pleased with QRs lately. It's rare that I can't scan them.

Better luck next time?

Not in the country much longer, so I am running out of opportunities.

are you on a 90 day passport no visa? travel to Mexico for a day then go back to NM to renew your 90 days

Wow I had almost exactly the same experience a week ago. It was the first time I had seen the option available but the QR code wouldn't scan, it was pretty bright out and the screen was hard to see so I had to give up...

Did it look like this terminal: #1588557
