Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck next year, according to CEO Elon Musk, who said on X that the company will use the factory space to build more two-seater Cybercab robotaxis.

The decision to wind down the futuristic, steel-clad EV comes after just a few short years of underwhelming sales. When Musk handed over the first few Cybertrucks in late 2023, he predicted Tesla would sell around 250,000 per year. It was supposed to be such a cornerstone of Tesla’s future that, before construction began, the company talked about its Texas factory as the “Cybertruck factory.” But Tesla has instead sold just tens of thousands — total — over the last three years.

Tesla is killing off the Cybertruck at a moment when it is trying to become an AI- and robotics-focused company. A big part of that is its robotaxi ambitions.

The company has spent the last two months putting Cybercabs on the streets in its hometown of Austin, Texas. With no major incidents to date, the company has said it plans to expand the Cybercabs operations to other cities, starting with Dallas later this month. (Tesla also operates robotaxi versions of its Model Y SUVs in Austin, Houston, and Dallas, as well as three cities in Florida.)

This is the third product Tesla has discontinued in order to fuel those greater ambitions. Earlier this year, the company decided to end production of the Model S sedan and Model X SUV and instead use the factory space dedicated to those vehicles to make Optimus humanoid robots.

First announced in 2019, the Cybertruck was a product that Musk had long obsessed over.

Sad day. Love the Cybertruck, as do existing owners. I hoped to own one one day myself. The Cybercab reason is a ruse. The CT was a great product at the wrong time. In an ideal world they would have increased production to lower prices, but the reduced demand made that almost impossible to achieve.

I think it's a super cool product... unfortunately it was a commercial failure.

If they had just made a conventional electric truck more in line with the Rivian TSLA would have been raking in $$$....

Too unique for mainstream tastes, imo. Didn't help that Elon ruined his reputation with half the country, too. I've met so many people who simply won't buy tesla because of association with Elon.

yeah you can get away with buying a 3/Y because they are so mainstream and by far the best EV product...

A cybertruck is pretty much like wearing a red MAGA hat...

And yet that will shift as the winds change... You can pretty much guarantee that now they are winning (temporarily), the left won't feel as much of an urge to smear literally everything Elon does.

I think they will just get more empowered and rabid...

Fear of an "association with Elon" tells you everything. "I don't understand Elon or US politics and fear what others may think of me" would be more accurate for such people.

It'd be more appealing if it weren't a full size truck. Full size appeals to commercial use but it's not conventionally attractive to the average person. However if it were made for us cubical dwelling nerds that merely want an aspirational truck (the Carhartt of vehicles/the hetero male equivalent of a Subaru), then it'd probably sell better.

Just buy a used Tacoma, put a Bitcoin logo on it, and let Elon keep his Cybertruck with the doge sticker. It'll be more reliable, it'll actually tow things, and with what you save, you can travel around the world

Good riddance. I can't admire the vehicle's tech because the aesthetics are so ugly.

I bet you don't enjoy sci-fi movies either.

This is so Tesla can begin production of their new minivan and there's nothing you can say to convince me otherwise.

Very Elon to rewrite history so a sales flop sounds like a misunderstood masterpiece. The next piece of garbage he builds will suffer the exact same fate... what a poser
