An Exchange Traded Fund is an investment trust that invests in an underlying asset and sells shares in the fund to investors. Because they are regulated (in the US by the SEC) they allow institutional investors (pension funds, high net worth individuals etc) to buy exposure to the underlying asset without owning the asset.
