We live in a cyberpunk story

Yeah that stood out to me as well. I'm sensing some misinformation from Reuters on that one. Who is flocking to this exactly?

Sadly, that part of the story seems to be true.
And I don't know where this is, but sad either way --> https://twitter.com/sama/status/1684297687708098565
That Sam Altman guy is the devil incarnate.
reply
Wow that's insane, and depressing.
reply
Yeah.
Maybe the reason is ChatGTP's success? Now people think that Sam Altman guy is some kind of genius instead of the monster he's proving himself to be.

"The Kenyan government says it plans to register all citizens for a new digital ID program by the end of this year, and the new digital ID cards will be issued from at least February 2024."

Also, this had the potential of onboarding quite a few people to digital currency -- and that usage displaces mPesa usage. Safaricom is partially owned by the government, so a non-regulated alternative to m-Pesa not only reduces government control over payments (and visibility to KRA of payment flows), lower m-Pesa usage also lessens the government's revenues.
