My daughter's 12th birthday is coming up soon. I normally buy her a gift of her choosing in the past years. I would limit the value of her gift to within $100CAD and let her pick whatever she wants. She usually chooses a Nintendo switch game that she wants or a toy that she likes.
Yesterday, when I asked what she wants for her birthday, she told me she doesn't want anything and rather have $100CAD worth of bitcoin as a gift. At that moment, even though I didn't show it, but I was feeling quite proud of her.
Then when I asked if she prefers the bitcoin be sent to her lightning spending wallet or on-chain savings wallet, she said she wanted it on-chain. I gave her a nod, told her "okay", and proceeded to go get my phone. When my head was turned, I couldn't help but have a wide grin on my face.
Very nice. Get her a lightning address and post it on SN for her birthday and let the plebs cook.

Thanks for the idea. I know stackers on SN are generous and love to see younger generation bitcoin adoption, but I want her to earn her sats from other people through hard work, innovation, and providing value to others. I don't want her to get started or get used to asking for handouts.

That's impressive! It's great to see your daughter showing an interest in cryptocurrency and financial responsibility at such a young age. Giving her $100CAD worth of Bitcoin for her 12th birthday is a unique and thoughtful gift. Just ensure she understands the concept and risks associated with cryptocurrencies. It could be a valuable learning experience for her as well.

Bitcoin, not crypto buddy. The way I see it, bitcoin is the best savings technology ever invented; it is also the least risky asset to hold in the world right now, probably the only asset you can truly hold without having it easily taken away from you by theft or coercion. So what risks?

let her in on these moments and share with her how proud you are :) some random bitcoiners on stackernews are also very proud of her!
Smart girl!

Why not show her how proud you are about her?

It's bad parenting opsec. You gotta play it cool. Anything you say will be used against you eventually.

Then, why have children in the first place? They will eventually become their own persons.

It's one thing to feel proud and another thing to show them that you're proud. They are on different levels, and this act had not reach the show them level yet. Also, probably because I'm Chinese, LOL.

Just curious, what does she spend her lightning wallet Bitcoin on?
reply
I taught her to buy gift cards from Bull Bitcoin for when she wants to do online shopping. But mostly, it's for when she wants to buy something when we're outside, she would get me to pay for the item in fiat cash, and she pays me back through lightning. She isn't really interested in shopping / buying things anyways, so it just happens once in a while.
