I orange pilled a small merchant, help make it stick!

So, my partner dragged me to the Rochester Fringe festival, and while buying some delicious Kettle Corn there, I asked Danielle, the woman at the cashier, whether she accepted Bitcoin.

She said “not yet!” She then proceed to tell a story of how a fellow vendor said during a team huddle that “if we passed a 20 dollar bill, by the time it got around this circle it would still be a 20 dollar bill, but if we used credit card transactions, all we would have left are transaction charges from the banks.”

This is the first time I received a positive response from a merchant in the US! We ended up buying a bag of kettle corn, and paying her with Bitcoin after helping her download Wallet of Satoshi.

So, now I need your help to make this experience stick for the merchant! Her wallet is stonyrandom34@walletofsatoshi.com

Let’s send her some sats so she can feel the power of magic internet money, and how it can be a game changer for small merchants at festivals the world over!

PS: This is their facebook page. If this takes off, I plan to leave them a message tomorrow so they know where all the sats are coming from. I am also including a screenshot of our purchase payment, as well as a photo of the kettle corn we bought!

Done! 10k sats coming at them. Let us know what the response is. Next, you'll have to set them up with the POS system that is in Breez for their actual business. I have had one person bite so far when I asked them if they took bitcoin. It was a great feeling sending them some sats immediately.

Forgot Breez also has a POS system! Honestly would have preferred to recommend something non-custodial like Phoenix or Breez, but having a lightning address is just such an advantage. Hoping all wallets get that added soon.

One good thing about a custodial lightning wallet is that it is available 24/7. Maybe the Lexe app mentioned today on SN could solve that for the rest of us in a non-custodial manner. #260694

I tried scanning the QR code provided with Phoenix first, then Mutiny and it failed for both saying something along the lines of "invalid payment request" or something like that. I then sent some sats to my WoS (first time using it). Mutiny to WoS cost 2 sats for the transaction. I then scanned the QR code from WoS. That worked. So, I'm not sure if WoS has some unique LN invoice or what was was going on. I'd love for the lightning address to be a thing or bolt12 implemented everywhere. I have that going on my CLN node but not much I can do with it now.

I scanned the QR code and it worked with Phoenix.

This is what the QR code encodes:

No splices for me yet. iOS 1.6.4. Message that pops up is "The service (walletofsatoshi.com) doesn't support Lightning addresses, or doesn't know this user."

I always ask if I could pay in bitcoin, and only one bar has said yes - but as a joke and continued with "one beer, one bitcoin!".

I kind of don't want to get into the situation you got in, where I have to hold up a queue and show the merchant how it works... I mean, I could and probably would - but I'd rather give a referral to some site or something.. but idk. If they only get a card/referral it is a higher probability of not happening.

And if I cannot get my friends to see bitcoin similar to how I do, how would I teach a stranger?

I'll keep askng and hope for a yes tough, and bite the "not yet"bullet when it happens.. Kudos to you for helping out and seemingly being a good sport about it! Keep it up!

Not very different from bitcoin.. Cash has no fees, but btc does have them

The primary difference is that the customer pays the fees rather than the business. This feels more fair and the incentives are better aligned

You're 100% right. Onchain transactions do cost fees - the fees help keep Bitcoin secure and ticking along.

Lightning does have fees but are pretty tiny.

Also, many things have hidden costs, cash included, to keep them secure and ticking along too. We just don't have an idea just how much it costs.

I'm in the process of thinking through a business card or flyer that I could pass out to small businesses like this so that they could learn about how bitcoin could be integrated into their business. I'm envisioning some minor details on the card and more information on the flyer, but ultimately, both would direct the business owner to go to a website that would have some simple to use resources to get them started.

If something like this exists already, I would love to check it out. Otherwise, I'll be releasing my work on SN for review before going live.
