No such thing as a free lunch.
That not everybody is a good person. Although, I still think most of them are good :)

Most people are unwilling to put in the work.

In school skill and hard work is generally rewarded. But in the real world skill only matters up to a point. After that it's more important who you know and whether they trust you
reply
Thankfully this kind of bullshit is less relevant in many high tech companies where skill still reigns supreme

big facts, and that you cant work your way to wealth necessarily. you have to own your way there

No such thing as a free lunch.
I presume this isn't literal but I imagined you racking up a huge lunch tab somewhere.

There exists only 2 types of people
Those who are humble
and those who are about to be humbled.

Alas, the humbling will be multiple decades or even generations for many

Don't procrastinate and go over scenarios and dreams in your mind too much. The first step is difficult if you're thinking of trying a new project, going to your job or even doing exercise but just going for it and then getting it done without the mind playing out that movie first, is often the way to open doors to fulfilling a goal. We regret what we didn't end up doing more than what we've done.

Learning through experience is the best method. You can theorize & study for years, but nothing beats actually "doing" it

Academia is trap / Ponzi scheme (especially in niche subjects / discipline where you basically can only continue with the academic career), only those really at the top benefit.

Prof (easy life) > Post docs > doctorates > students > undergrads
And often what you are taught has little to no overlap with what you do in the industry later on..
Yea picture is a bit darker than it probably is but PhD really felt like a waste of time

Even today, it's a bit hard for me to lower expectations. Work, relationships, life in general. I learned that even if everything is going well, there's a chance of failing. Enjoy the good moment, prepare for bad ones. And read between the lines, the untold truths.

Every job requires some cleanup once it's done. Even when you think you're done, you're not actually done - you need to pack away your tools, clear temp project files, etc etc.

The grimness of death
reply
I don't think it is death itself that is grimm. I agree that the process of dying can certainly be.

I consider death a blessing (at least, in some circumstances). Imagine having to live forever, until the end of time. I would consider that my worst irrational fear.

The only certainty in life is that there are no certainties, except for this realization.
Therefore, enlightenment can be heavy shit.
The only thing I absolutely must do is shit and die, but not particularly in that order.
If there is nothing after death, it per definition, can't last long.

With any luck, none of us really "get it."
I hope to think it is a blessing that we are doomed to look for answers to unanswerable questions.
