The average size of a public Lightning channel has been just over 6,000,000 sats for most of the last year, but the recent spike in capacity in early Oct has sent this average much higher.

Many look at the declining number of public Lightning channels and assume something is wrong with Lightning, but that’s only part of the picture.

There may be fewer public Lightning channels, but the average one has much higher capacity today.

I assume there's one major player affecting this

i’m not so sure, but i can see how my chart makes it look that way.

just found a way better, way more granular chart with much longer history on amboss, the recent spike might have been an anomaly, but the upwards trend has persisted for most of the year.

That might be because of larger participants like binance & kraken opening HUGE channels which push the average up.
