I usually just pose that to people and try to walk them through their thoughts on it without answering it for them. If you pursue this question long enough, I think you come to the conclusion that it's a mutually agreed upon ledger, and people generally agree to use the ledger with the best properties, which is Bitcoin.
As for resources, I tend to tailor them to the audience, e.g. if someone is "progressive" I tend to recommend "Debt: The First 5000 years" or if they don't invest a lot, I recommend Saylor's shorter form podcasts.
