Issue with this is that just forking isn't enough. They need to be maintained and that needs to be sustainable. To early to say if that will happen.

Yeah, I agree with you. I guess I don't "use" these apps much. I haven't tried Proton Calendar. I try to avoid using SMS altogether so this crappy app helps with that.

I test and try many but the only one I've been able to move people to is Signal. It has a few tradeoffs but its good enough IMO.

Nextcloud is great if you are open to selfhosted contact sync, calendars, and tasks.

I use https://tasks.org app and sync via nextcloud. Tasks.org is the best task app I have found on Android.
