I know for me personally, they are only ripe for a very short time. And by the time I get back to the woods where I find them, the animals have already decided to harvest them for themselves.
Just like morel mushrooms, there is a very short harvest season and people are pretty protective of where they find them.
They perish too easily for me, which is why I prefer apples
