Every once in a while someone will ask me how much Bitcoin I have. There are many good reasons not to tell them how much. What is your preferred response to this question?
If someone asks how much Bitcoin I have, I tell them: the same amount you have in your retirement fund. Zero. More than I can afford, that’s why I have debt. 1%. 5%.

Depends on who you are:
Underground Bitcoiner: downplay how much you have. If you don't deny it entirely you can still claim you have some and in private situations advocate for Bitcoin
Outspocen Bitcoin advocate: Admit you're all-in or even took debt. You're free to take a strong stance and advocate for the merits of Bitcoin on a political scale.

In order to avoid wrenches, the correct answer nowadays is: oh I don't have any. that's just a pet rock used for anti money laundering 😅

Tell them to fuck off and that they won't get a reply. I made the mistake of giving somebody I knew for more than 10 years a vague number. They are in bitcoin longer than I have been. Still was a mistake.

First rule in bitcoin club is we don't talk about how much bitcoin we have

What’s Bitcoin?

Indeed. Same as you don’t about fiat money, savings, gold holding etc.

You never have enough.

I show them my 300k sats. They don't need to know about cold storage at the first date

Isn't it a bit rude? You wouldn't ask someone how much they have in their pension or how much they have in their savings accounts.
reply
“How big is your penis?”
Or
“How much do you weigh?”
Some questions aren’t ok to ask.

I personally hate talking casually to people about bitcoin.
If they are really interested, then I'll go deeper with them.
It's really none of their business how much bitcoin I have.
Would you ask someone what is their salary, how much do they have in their 401k, etc?
reply
i think it's perfectly fine just saying that you aren't comfortable answering that question or you'd rather not disclose it.
reply
"I will tell you If you tell me how much money you have in your accounts"
reply
There is seldom a good reason to tell someone how much you own.
