Stacker News Improvement Ideas
  • There are a lot of territories
  • On clicking the home drop down - if the sorting order of territory is not alphabetic and it is based on some activity ranking - like zap ranking of posts within the territories - wouldnt it be better ?
reply

A separate page that allows you to explore territories by popularity, age, sats, etc and browse descriptions would be nice.

Maybe the "both" part, but the "wrong order" part is just sloppiness.

Is there a setting where I can say that I don't want the related posts thing open by default?
reply
no but it's only open if there are no comments yet. so you shouldn't lose any screen real estate by it being default open in that case. we're open for feedback though

It's super hard to keep up with recent. I'll browse it then get sucked into something then by the time I resume a bunch of new stuff is posted.
reply
Seems like a better problem for you to have than the rest of us. ;)
My "hot" feed has been great lately. You all did a great job tweaking that to deliver stuff I want to see pretty quickly after it's been posted.
reply

Awesome! I honestly haven't had the time review how that's performing. It's fully operating on priors.
reply

I recently suggested internally that we should use the global score of own items since I am not interested in what our ranking algorithm thinks how interested I am in my own stuff.
Most of the times, I see my own stuff on the top just to discover in a SN incognito tab to see it ranked much lower globally.
Maybe that's also the case for you and maybe you would consider that to be an improvement too?
reply
99 sats \ 1 reply \ @k00b 24 Jan
We're both too "inside the machine" to assume other people want the experience we want (at least at high resolutions). The way this works, you're seeing your stuff ranked higher because you trust the people zapping your items. It isn't because it was posted by you at least.
reply

Ah, makes sense. Badly written on my part. My point still stands though. Just realized I didn't even mention my main point like I did internally:
What is much more interesting to me is to see how much other people like my content

A couple of weeks back I posted:
Bullish as fuck on 2024. I have deployed some capital into the top miners for a short-term trade in a tax sheltered account. For the record I mostly hold cold-storage BTC, but this is capital that cannot be used to buy spot (UK ISAs).
Making my trade public so you guys can all shit on me if this goes tits up.

I am of course getting slaughtered, but will reevaluate a few months from now. Trade remains in-play...!

One client asked me if they could pay me in Tron USDT. Whaaaaatttt??? What should I tell him to be polite? Seriously
reply
21 sats \ 1 reply \ @k00b 24 Jan
I would tell him that you'd prefer to receive bitcoin because you'll otherwise have to swap it. If you're in position to push a little bit, charge him for the swap + your time to swap.

Thanks for the reply. I am so bad at asking for these things. I should learn. When I asked for sats, he said they only work in USDT and it seems there are a lot of people working in USDT, he told me. I didn't want to push it further. Ideally I should find bitcoiner clients
reply
Just kindly ask if he minds sending BTC.

I asked, but he told me they only work in USDT with many others in their community. I think they all should open private lightning channels between them. anyway...

Thanks. Yes I tried to ask for sats but he only works with that shitcoin. I may have to use that service. It seems legit. I don't want to put more barriers as I don't know him very well yet.

I have a 13-year-old boy who doesn’t know how to read the sight word “said”. He still misreads it as “speak”.
It breaks my heart.
Today, I had a brainwave. Even though “said” is a sight word, I drew “aid” to his attention. He would have heard of “first aid”. I hope it chases "speak" away from his mind.
I pored my notes in the afternoon. It seems like rhymes are a good way to develop one's phonological awareness.
Inspiration struck me again. Why don't I write a haiku that ends in rhymes for him?
Here's my masterpiece:
He sits on his bed thinking about what she said His heart wants first aid

I guess so. It's kind of nice. I thought I had adapted to the new SN, but the onslaught of posts is starting to feel overwhelming again.

We have to think about SN as having ‘seasons’ - sometimes it’s a time to sow and other times you need to sit back and let it grow. You can’t be sowing and reaping all the time or you will burn out and end up resenting the place.

I don't understand how the fiat world can continue.
The value of things compared to your salary was so cheap back in the day.
Yes, many things are better and cheaper, specially electronics, but things like housing or other important stuff are incredibly expensive.
I wonder what will happen in the future.
But then I think about countries with super huge inflation like Argentina, Venezuela, etc, and the people there just... live?
I don't know how, but life just moves on. Humans are incredibly resilient.
reply
0 sats \ 1 reply \ @quark 24 Jan
The future? Even more expensive! I just had a thought reading your post, about the people living in high inflation countries, maybe there are more people that we think, using crypto for their savings. Crypto is certainly popular in those countries.
reply
At the end of the day it is the currency that gets devalued.
So, everything is more expensive over time, by design.
No rich person would have their wealth on a bank account, they would have assets, real things, not some silly currency.
