Territories are pretty expensive. They seem more expensive than a typical domain name even... Don't think the economics will work out until there's some free market system for territory pricing

Interesting observation, which mirrors what I've noticed from Reddit. The best communities there are very specific and surprisingly narrow, rather than broad and vague.
