You would be shocked at how the US is portrayed in Europe by the media and politicians. The big difference in living standards is of course ignored.

I doubt it. I have many international acquaintances, so I've probably heard most of it. Honestly, we probably live down to a lot of the stereotypes, which is all the more testament to the value of markets.
