I will not be renewing ~startups, the cost is an orders of magnitude too big in any case, but even if it was much lower I don't have enough time to invest into managing a territory on a platform that I don't own where I have to pay a large sum for the privilege.
The incentives are misaligned imho, creating a territory should be much cheaper and preferably one-time, then when the site grows so do the revenues from territories. This way SN gets all the cash upfront while this is still being built out and totally experimental so all the risk is on the owners while they are paying a very large sum of sats for the privilege.
I like the idea of territories and it could be great over time but the cost and incentives mean that everything will be pushed into couple of big ones that could potentially survive on their own, meaning that either more niche things will go to another platform or pollute major territories.
The incentives are misaligned imho
Would you mind saying more about this? I agree with most of your sentiment but your non-renewal suggests our incentives are to make sure you come out ahead else we don't get paid for very long.

what do you think the right price for a territory is?
also, there is a one-time payment option available today

There have been some really interesting ideas over at the ~meta afaik.

can you link a specific post or comment?

Nope, I can only recall reading about that in there.

I know there is one time payment but 3m sats is an insanity to spend on this, its an order of magnitude too big (at least at this stage). Maybe when SN is bigger than reddit, but even then doubtfully
I think 10k/month is the upper bound that one could remotely justify for it at this stage

that’s fair. for context, there are about 10 territories earning more than 10,000 sats/month in revenue today, the top one is at 74k sats/month.
i suspect these numbers will go up over time, but i understand not wanting to pay 100k sats/month yet.
i tried one territory ~stocks that i quickly realized was not going to do well, and then pivoted to ~charts which is doing much better.

Or in other words:
Running a territory is like running a Lighting node: a noble cause, but an unprofitable one, too.
