Listen to peter zeihan and he explains this. The russians need their old soviet land back. They are facing demographic collapse and are surrounded by unfriendly states. They need to be able to defend their boarders. The russians have been doing this by expanding for hundreds of years. Russia has been invaded too many times in it's history.
