The past few weeks had been summer and autumn hikes, and I would it would be fitting to post another winter hike this week to change it up a bit. This week we visit Dog Mountain at Mount Seymour Provincial Park. The Dog Mountain Trail is an easy out and back trail that is about 4.8km long with 162m elevation gain. The trail is accessible from the Mount Seymour parking lot, but winter hikers must park at the overflow parking as the main parking lot is reserved for skiers and snowboarders in the winter. The trail head to the Dog Mountain Trail is clearly marked and the snow on the trail is usually very well packed in the winter, as it is a very popular winter hiking trail, due to its beautiful views, relatively short length, and easy difficulty.
Trailhead was clearly marked.
The trail was very clear and snow on trail very well packed by previous hikers.
Our family had been on this trail numerous times in different seasons. The pictures shown in this post was taken from the time we hiked the trail in late January 2021. It was cloudy and snowing during our hike. With weather like that, we expected no views at the viewpoint, just like our numerous other winter hikes. As expected, when we got the the viewpoint, we were greeted with a blanket of white fog and cloud blocking out the view.
As we rested at the viewpoint and had our snacks, the Sun had other plans. It seemed to want to burn through the clouds, grace us with its bright light, and present to us the view. As we remained at the viewpoint to take photos and let our kids play in the snow, the cloud slowly cleared up enough to show us a glimpse of the view below.
The Sun burning through the clouds.
My older kids playing in the snow.
View of nearby mountains.
The Sun continuing its burn through the clouds.
Enough cloud cleared up for us to catch a glimpse of the view of the city.
