Thinking a lot about how AI is different from human brains. I think the next few years will be fun, I think there will be more philosophical (and possibly scientific) exploration into things like consciousness and free will.
reply
What you call "AI" is not intelligence. Is just a computer program (remember is A PROGRAM) that is trained to read what humans put in storage data, information.
The so called "AI" will never have human intelligence, but in time will make humans dumb because they will get too used to use this so called "AI".
So let's stop calling it "AI". Is a total bullshit to enslave more the humanity. That's all.
reply
I think "intelligence" is technically a fair word to use for something that gathers and utilizes information correctly or accurately, but I would agree with you that a distinction does need to be made.
I prefer to call it the difference between intelligence and wisdom. Just because you can acquire knowledge doesn't mean you can problem solve effectively or think creatively, and LLMs are a great example of that.
AI can absolutely help people gain knowledge quickly, and optimistically, this could give us MORE opportunity to focus on what really matters: the raw ideas and concepts behind the knowledge, the effective application of knowledge, creativity, and real wisdom.
That's why I'd agree with you that distinctions about what AI can and can't do is extremely important for us to make the most of it and avoid being completely stunted by it. Using AI does not inevitably enslave you.
reply
AI can absolutely help people gain knowledge quickly,
yeah I saw how they gain... by being more dumb

Stacker News is 1000 days old. Maybe 1001 or more by the time you see this.
So what?
Well, nothing much really. Just a fun fact.
In some circles, however, a 1000 days signify some kind of a milestone:
In early childhood development, the "1000 days" concept refers to the period from conception to the second birthday, which is considered a critical window for a child's nutrition and development. This concept is based on the understanding that the right nutrition during this period can have a profound impact on a child's ability to grow, learn, and thrive over a lifetime.
So maybe SN is a toddler now?

KYC or not to KYC that is the question today!
Pros:
  • convenience
  • access to high liquidity
  • easy to withdraw
  • easy link to dollars when needed
Cons:
  • another place where my ID will be
  • limits
  • no privacy
  • getting no-KYC will cause slippage meaning less sats
🤔
reply
Agreeing with Darth here.
I also see it in the same way as cash money: if you can't pay with btc and need to use fiat, try to use cash iso card. This to avoid that all tx can be 100% traced at some point as everyone only uses kyc cards anymore. Keep the cash system alive, increase the number of cash trades and defend cash money when gov threatens it. This is a proxy fight in defense of Bitcoin (digital cash).
Similarly, in Bitcoin, push up the number of non kyc coins and p2p trades/spends, to avoid an unlikely but possible outcome of ending up as a kyc chain. The less coins that remain non kyc, the better, and the true believers in Bitcoin should lead the way here.
reply
Earning it is the best, I haven't bought any for a while.
reply
reply
KYC is bad because your personal info is out there in multiple hands and you don't know where is traveling and used. THAT IS THE REAL ISSUE WITH KYC.
KYC doesn't really matter if you just buy - withdraw and never sell back for fiat. Just move around the sats through LN channels and absolutely nobody could trace nothing. I wrote several guides about that.
If you can avoid KYC exchanges, then do it ! But if you are forced to use them, don't worry too much. Govs will NOT come after you because you DCA 20 cuckbucks /month.
JUST NEVER SELL BACK FOR FIAT. is so fucking simple. Spend and replace.
reply
Gotcha 🫡
reply
My cynical thought about KYC is, if someone wanted to track you down via anonymous transactions, they probably could anyway. Especially at the nation state level. True privacy on the internet is almost impossible.
There are multiple ways you can "lose" your bitcoin in the future if you need to.
reply
We should not consider this as a purely personal point or advantage. It's also about the chain as a whole. The more non kyc coins circulate, the better for everyone in terms of privacy and censorship resistance.
In fiat, if everyone ditches cash money for convenient cards, that opens the door to a 100% controllable money network for the government. Make it hard on them, use and promote the use of cash money and p2p bitcoin.

@k00b @ek have you thought of adding a warrant canary of some kind to the site that you could use if you were ever approached by who knows in some capacity about something that the users might want to know about but you were gagged, that you could then not renew as a signaling mechanism? You could bury it in the Legal page as a paragraph and then not update should something transpire?
reply
and renew it once a month if its an all clear
reply

I've thought about putting a literal canary icon in the footer. Then if we're approached, have an icon of a dead canary.
reply
you need to set it up to die on its own unless you renew it (feed it), otherwise it can be anti-gag order action

77 sats \ 1 reply \ @k00b 8 Mar
Ahhh good tip! I guess they can't punish you for not doing something but they can punish you for doing something.
reply
Mhh, maybe we can regularly sign something that expires fast enough (a certificate basically) and link to it in the legal page? And when we're approached, it automatically expires and is not renewed. The additional benefit is that only the holder of the private key can renew it.
But that would mean we rely on users being able to verify signatures. Key rotation is simply the first thing that came into my mind when thinking about warrant canaries. But I would think anyone who cares about warrant canaries can be expected to know how to use gpg --verify?
Turns out the first commercial use of a warrant canary also used a digital signature:
The first commercial use of a warrant canary was by the US cloud storage provider rsync.net, which began publishing its canary in 2006. In addition to a digital signature, it provides a recent news headline as proof that the warrant canary was recently posted as well as mirroring the posting internationally.

BTW, I keep forgetting to ask you this. I couldn't explain well what I was trying to talk to you about a few weeks ago. How hard would it be to just add another type post to the menu which would be an exact duplicate of a discussion post except with perpetual editing allowed? I'm not sure what to call it. Maybe "index?" @DarthCoin, are you here for input too? Remember the other day we talked about this?
reply
147 sats \ 4 replies \ @ek 8 Mar
I forgot to reply to the thread where the usual suspects were talking about this
oh, I was even mentioned, didn't notice, I thought I read this thread while driving by
Regarding #449228:
Also, he told me that they didn't love the idea of creating special use posts.
The issue isn't necessarily creating a special use post, but perpetual edits are probably more generally useful (without breaking too much existing UX) and just implementing a special use post would be quite limiting and less worth the time and effort to implement it (and maybe even more complex, special cases are in general (lol) more complex).
However, if we have general perpetual edits, we need transparency via edit history which you didn't like but it doesn't have to be "in your face". So I think it's possible to get maximum value out of perpetual edits and fit your needs. Imo, an edit history would even be useful in your use case so it's easy to see what you added to the index so we don't have to read everything again to find what changed? I am assuming here that you don't want to be limited to append-only edits but actually want to edit everything.
Essentially, we try to prioritize features that aren't "limited" but basically are something that can be used for all kinds of things, in the best case even things that we can't imagine yet.
If we just add a specific post type, people wouldn't get creative with it, I believe.
@k00b and me talked about perpetual edits last week (?) and I mentioned I like companies that send diffs of what they changed in their policies instead of just "hey we updated some stuff" and then send you all 748014 pages again and you can figure out yourself what they actually changed.
But we'll keep your use case in mind, too. I think they are actually very similar. 👀
reply
Yes. Just two things from my perspective:
  1. I like discussion posts as they are. We need an edit limit or it will fuck up the flow of discussion. You could be replying about something that is later edited by the OP. Confusion
  2. For what I'm talking about, having an edit history will cause clutter and be unnecessary.
Maybe @DarthCoin has some input here? The radentor posts are an example of what I'm talking about.
reply

Yes, this is the greatest concern we have next to straight up abuse (completely rewriting something) but I think it's solvable. We just need to figure something out. At least I don't want to not try at least.
For what I'm talking about, having an edit history will clutter up the kind of posts I'm talking about.
How exactly? You mean because you would edit a lot, like multiple edits per hour? Or because you think the edit history will be immediately visible when you visit a post?
A solution for the former would be to group edits in a specific time period together (like every edit within the same hour shows up as the same edit in the history) and a solution for the latter would be to be show if you click on something like edit history in the context menu:
reply
Yes. Edit history would be fine in the context menu.
reply
  1. Agreed, discussion posts remain as it is, with the 10m window (in case you want to correct errors and stuff like that).
  2. Main posts, like long posts, guides, essays, lists etc I would like to have them fully editable. I would not be so crazy to change the whole text, will be just small updates maybe, in time, if something became obsolete or were some mistakes that other readers point them out etc.
Is it nice to have like a small footnote with history changes? Maybe, but that could clutter more the SN database I think. And for what? Just for few readers that will click it for curiosity? Keep it simple.
reply
Yes, agreed. A "special" type of post, like the ones that @Radentor was doing with the lists of services/wallets etc, that will always be in a continuous change and need updating.
