2 of my cats also do that, but rarely. So what I did? Instead of 2 small litters I put a bigger one with plenty of sand in it.
... but now I have a bigger problem: one cat is taking a bath in that sand ! OMG and after that is coming to me to kiss me FFS !

We had two boxes, because we had two cats. One died last year, but the cat we still have got used to switching boxes, having his choice where to go. Maybe we should have one big one.
