Former treasury secretary Mnuchin is on a roll, huh? It's good to have friends in high places. The idea of this guy controlling tons of NYC real estate through NYCB coupled with TikTok's surveillance capabilities is scary as hell. I really wonder what the hell is going on? https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/14/former-treasury-secretary-mnuchin-is-putting-together-an-investor-group-to-buy-tiktok.html
I forget how long ago this all started with Tik Tok. Seems like it was 2021? Out of no where all of a sudden politicians started talking about how dangerous Tik Tok is. Friends of mine started asking me about it. I think its terrible. I think the CCP probably does have an active hand in it. I don't trust the "founder". I don't think people should use it.
But.
Do you really want the government deciding what apps people can install on their devices? Where is all of this coming from. I can tell you, the most likely thing is Silicon Valley. I would bet a lot of sats that lobbyists from the other social platforms are behind this. Tik Tok has been eating their lunch since 2020. When you can't beat them, use the state against them. That's my theory.
Clearly, this is a solution that is worse than the problem. Social media is toxic. Its addictive. It mines your personal privacy and sells that info to the highest bidder, but this is not the way.

As another user says, I'm not in favor of TikTok either, but even less so that a government dictates what you can use and what you can't, I should be the one who decides if they watch me or not.
