Howdy there, partner! Welcome on into the Stacker Saloon.
Saddle on up to a stool and spill the beans about your day, fire away with them questions, or let loose and give us the lowdown on your wild and woolly life. We're all ears, so don't hold back!
We're open round the clock, so mosey on in whenever you please!
My nephew just turned 16. It’s crazy how time flies. I gifted him a book called ‘The War of Art’ by Steven Pressfield. One I’ve grown to love over the years since firsts being told about it. It’s a quick read, and I highly recommend it. Here is one of my favorite quotes,
“We fear discovering that we are more than we think we are. More than our parents/children/teachers think we are. We fear that we actually possess the talent that our still, small voice tells us. That we actually have the guts, the perseverance, the capacity. We fear that we truly can steer our ship, plant our flag, reach our Promised Land. We fear this because, if it’s true, then we become estranged from all we know. We pass through a membrane. We become monsters and monstrous.”

All you need is egg ( and honey ) .
reply
I find if I don't use some kinda conditioner my scalp gets really dry and I end up with dandruff 😭😭 I don't want to be a chemical slave forever. How have you found these side effects? Or have you not encountered them and the egg and honey has been enough to moisturise your scalp?
reply
I didn't use any conditioner even when I was using soap, and you can test with rosemary oil, but mix with some carrier oil, like jojoba oil.

I've had tea tree oil recommended to deal with dry scalp.

Does that not make the hair oily? Might be worth a shot, I wanna move away from chemical shampoo and conditioner.

Got home Thursday evening. Almost 3800km in 6 days. It was quite a bit of driving, but we all enjoyed the places we visited.
reply
Awesome. Road trips are the best. They are a bit more challenging with kiddos but worth it. They will always remember the family road trips.
reply
60 sats \ 1 reply \ @gnilma 23 Mar
Remember it or not, I believe going on trips will help shape the kids' development by allowing them to see different places and experience different things. I don't buy the saying that it's a waste to bring a small kid traveling because they won't remember it anyways.
Regarding road trips, although destination trips where you fly and visit certain cities save a lot of time and involve less driving, road trips allows you to see the small towns and places along the road. I also like looking out for interesting town names. Fun ones I remember along I5 are Yolo, CA and Weed, CA haha.
We are headed to another one in the summer, a long one. From your home town Toronto all the way to the easternmost point of Canada. Fun fact, we also saw the town of Dildo in NL when planning our trip, but will probably not visit it, because it's a bit out of the way.

Two questions about trust scores:
  1. Many of us zap almost every reply we get, varying the amount to reflect quality. Oftentimes, these are comments that no one else zaps. Does that hurt our trust scores?
  2. Are those of us who like to zap newcomers' bios, as part of the welcome committee, hurting our trust scores in doing so?
The meta question is "Does SN want to incentivize those behaviors?"
reply
Very good questions. My personal feeling is that SN Saloon is not counted, is mostly shitposting, memes and offtopic discussions. I mean, it should count for anything, only sats people are zapping. The rest of comments inside a post, I think is counting and should count for reputation, because sometimes are very good discussions and even long threads.
Zapping back I think is just a method courtesy or like "hey, I read you comment, I agree)
reply
Zapping back I think is just a method courtesy
I agree, but as such it's a pro-social activity. It seems like it would not be ideal if it was negatively impacting people's SN reputation.
reply
Not sure if @k00b is aware of this, but I observed a lot many SN users behavior. And some of them are using multiple accounts to zap themselves from different accounts. Is quite easy to catch those if you browse SN without logging in (due to personal mutes or filters you will not see this from your account).
idk how this affect the reputation, I think is quite hard to control. The only thing that could help is stay vigilant. In then end only good content get attention anyways.
reply
I'm not nearly clever enough to solve that problem. As I understand the formula, you're right that you could have more influence as two accounts than as one. Two early zaps of 5k sats are going to be worth more than one early zap of 10k, provided the accounts have similar reputation.
I'm sure the team are well aware of that, though.

Roughly: Person A trusts person B according the binomial proportion of their zapping. That is, roughly, # A agreed with B / (# B zapped - # B agreed with A). (We construct a confidence interval so we can predict with smaller samples what this proportion is likely to be.)
So if B is zapping a lot of stuff that A never zaps, A begins to trust B less. But, importantly, we normalize A's trust among everyone they trust, so if A isn't zapping at all for a period of time, and person B continues to zap as does everyone else, A will continue to roughly trust B the same.
When A downzaps things B has zapped, # A agreed with B roughly becomes # A agreed with B - (10 * # A disagreed with B).
Note: this is only a single link in the trust graph. A can never agree with B directly, but still end up trusting B, if A trusts C and D, and C and D trust B.
reply
I think I understand the trust graph concept. How is that converted into our effect on zaprank, though? It seems like we must also have something like a global trust score.
I wasn't thinking about outlawed (or just net downzapped) content. That would make sense.

I remember this book that I had it when I was young, 12-14 years old. It was prohibited in communism. Totally. I got it from underground market (people that were traveling abroad, bringing prohibited books and items). If they catch you with such book, you go straight to jail, gulag. You and your family. But first, if you are in school, they put you in front of all others and they have to spit on you and throw eggs. Total individual demolition. I got lucky that I had a strong character and nothing could affect me of this crazy propaganda. But I suffered a lot those years.
reply
I'm not surprised to hear that it was banned. I'm glad you were able to overcome the suffering you were put through.
It was required reading in my school (and probably lots of others, especially during the Cold War), but of course our teachers insisted on making sure we were told what the meaning was, instead of just getting to read it and discover it on our own.

reply
I love to learn about ancient hacks! usually all you need is the right materials, simple tools, with basic techniques, and you can just get things done! and improve it on your own with enough patience and practice.
Now, many people think it's really hard to make things or they need to invest in many fancy tools or even machines to make anything, so it's better to buy... thus working harder to buy the "better" ones.

I'm not sure if any one stoic used the exact wording but from what I've read it seems the general concept of cosmopolitism was a big part of the philosophy. This is often described as being a "citizen of the world". To me it means rejecting the arbitrary tribalism of identity politics and embracing the value of each individual qua individual.

If that were true then why the Greeks and Turks battle over yogurt.
These nations and boarders developed because humans are not a monolith. Due to free will and reason we will always have differences and not all of us will always agree on we should tackle today's problems.
Borders and nations are good if humans acted more in a hive mind mentality then this would make sense but it goes against our very nature.
reply
why the Greeks and Turks battle over yogurt.
Because were dumb followers of kings and tyrants telling them to "fight for your country"... And they go to die for nothing.
Country, nation are concepts that have no meaning nowadays. People should evolve from that "herd mentality" to sovereign individual mentality.
YOU, yourself could be your own country, because only like that you can defend it right. I will not go to fight in a war for you. But I will defend my own body as much as I can. Because is my "own country".
reply
It’s easy to say this in a state that works. It’s easy to be a nomad and be self sovereign in a state that works. Go try this in a failed state. Go to Haiti right now and preach this same rhetoric. You ever think about the people who were free and got together to push evil out. This is what bitcoin is. It’s not about the software it’s about the people
All this anti state stuff is just odd coming from bitcoiners who also shit on shitcoiners. Especially when bitcoin exists because of the state
reply

Greeks and Turks are different from Greece and Turkey tho, and there are many geeks still living in Anatolia. 👀
And all I'm saying is if you really want to be free, see yourself separate from "your country" - you are a living and breaking human, and free to live your life instead of doing what you are told to.
