If I am going to keep this territory going for any length of time, I feel I should just spend the 3 million sats for lifetime. Otherwise, it seems like I am renting. With renting, I feel pressure to make the territory into something that produces a revenue to offset the monthly or yearly cost.
With the lifetime purchase, I would not feel that same pressure. It would just feel like an investment. A place to go share and maybe one day it turns into something other people care about.
Can it be an investment? If I want to sell the territory later, and there is some engagement and interesting content there, can I transfer it to others for more than 3 million sats? Is the territory tied to the name or something else?
I would love some perspectives on these trade offs. I really enjoy it here. But 3 million sats is a lot for me. What to do???
I'm running B2B territory, I feel like you do. However this is my goal past, present and future..... Use it for my B2B current and potential customers and suppliers that will slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly consider to use Bitcoin (via Lightning) for buying and selling their raw and finished materials, products, shipping charges etc.
This is what my heart feels will eventually take place.
But in reality, reality meaning what seems is the is strong resistance to humans actually doing this. Yes B2C for a coffee shop or bar, restaurant , but for the textile, wholesale clothing business it's seems to be many more years.
So I will just keep the monthly charge for the territory, maybe B2B use will actually happen in a few more years ?

We are in the same boat man, if business and merchants aren't here... it will be a tricky journey. We can always join forces if you like (~AGORA marketplace is open to anyone) or we can friendly compete and continue learning from each other. I'm keeping an eye on ~B2B

Actually B2B needs to support @AGORA as we are all in the same boat, make Bitcoin be used by the Worldwide, B2C, B2B I will continue to suggest @AGORA to my friends, contacts etc. Thank you guys, Rich

It's fun being on what feels like the bleeding edge. Lots of questions. Lots to learn. I believe this site can be something really awesome. Just not sure exactly what yet.
reply
Those are all good questions. I think they're still working out exactly how all of this is going to work, but I've heard that the idea is for territories to be transferable.
If I were buying a territory, I would buy it outright: 100k a month is a lot. There's been some talk of allowing co-owners, so maybe you want to wait until they let us know how that might work.
reply
It is transferable and holds some kind of value, I can see it as an investment. Like it's just 3 million sats locked up.
reply
I look at it differently. I am ok with the 100k sats a month as long as I can generate 100k sats in rewards for the month to cover it. I am going to be on SN anyways so I don't mind putting those rewards back into the site via the territory fee, whereas if I outlay the 3M sats that is 3M sats less in my stack. I could theoretically spend the 3M sats from my stack and then just buy 3M sats to replace it but I am not working so I don't want to throw off my budget.
reply
How long do you want to have it though. Because after 2 and half years paying 100k, you could have purchased it, right?
reply
Yes this is true and I will hopefully have it for many years. At some point it might make sense to outlay the 3M sats but as long as my monthly rewards are meeting the 100k fee I am ok keeping it this way. Also at some point I think they will have to lower the cost of territories or have some sort of dynamic pricing to reflect Bitcoin's purchasing power at the time.
reply
I get that perspective. I like set prices.
reply
Do you worry about being able to continue generating 100k a month as bitcoin appreciates?
reply
And I just started so I have no idea what I might generate really
reply
No. I think zaps stay small bit the number of participants grows and it balances out. 1 btc = 1 btc. Stacker is helping to set the value of things in Bitcoin. I like the fact that they have set prices and plan to keep them.
reply
I don't worry about it but I might have to rethink my strategy if/when that happens.

right now the territory is not tied to either your username or the territory name.
archived territories can be purchased by other stackers, and you can change the name of your territory at any time.
we have talked about how selling a popular territory to other stackers for more money might work, but no concrete plans yet.
have you thought about how you might like a peer-to-peer territory marketplace to work?
reply
So an archived territory will sell for the same price as a brand new one, I take it?
Seems like someone could just post that they want to sell their territory, and assuming it has some value over a new territory, people could make offers, and then they make the transfer.

yes, archived territories and new ones sell for the same price

There's the ~AGORA for that. We had someone trying to sell a nym earlier... not sure if it has succeeded #425441
The difference of buying an archived territory is that you inherit all the previous post previously published on it
reply
Interesting. I assume the value would be in the content?
reply
This makes the idea of evergreen content all the more crucial -- I hadn't thought of that before, but the more the site offers tools / support to curate evergreen-ness, the more viable and attractive territories are -- like a fertile plot of land that keeps spitting out potatoes or whatever.
reply
It is a territory. Seems like it should be like digital bitcoin real estate

yes correct. Take ~builders. it's a place for an existing community using the territory as an alternative to... let's say slack or discord.
I think the most important is to engage with the community or create one. We'll hopefully have soon some functionality to allow people to zap or chip in territories, or also multy-ownership will be a great thing to have. You cannot do it alone, in the meantime, invite people to join you, create contents in your territory and interact with it actively! That's my advice and approach
reply
Is territories and experiment or if we pay 3 million sats, we will have a territory for lifetime? What about after that. Will we be leaving our territories behind or do we get archived?
reply
What about after that.
After death? Man you really are a low time-preference dude.
reply
If this site takes off and becomes a better reddit and everyone uses it. Owning the heading for something super universal is interesting. And what happens to it later. Seems like something we should be able to pass along.
reply
Right now it's a donation to the Stacker News community.
In the future it might become a low-profitability and low-effort side hustle to run a territory.
If that comes true it might now be somewhere in between a donation and a odd-odds-investment.
reply
TheWildHustle is doing it for fun, this is how Hustle gets his kicks
I figured I'd create a territory about something I want to learn about, 3d printing was a close 2nd option....and still on the table.
reply
So I would assume in that case monthly makes sense. To me, if it is a territory, it should be something that may be claimed and built on. I didn't realize it was donations.
reply
I don't see a clear monetization path, one might pop up, or territories could get reworked (which is pretty likely). I could see someone viewing territories as a gamble on the SN territory concept flourishing. If territories become better over time through community centered iterations, early territory involvement may prove its value.
reply
So basically we dont know and this is all an experiment. 3 millions zaps seems steep if it doesn't lead to anything. I guess it makes sense why most people are choosing monthly right now.
reply
One of my friends I am working on getting in here is really into 3d printing and cad.
reply
I wonder how many of the existing territories are the lifetime ones? Does anyone know?
reply
I am interested to know.
reply
As you mentioned that you want this territory for forever, this is better you buy it for lifetime. It will eventually cost you a lot less. The idea 'Alternative' is great and I don't see any fall in it's popularity ever. I can pledge that I will contribute in this territory as much as I can. From the onset of it, I loved it. There's no need to overthink, just do it and SN will definitely pay you back in less than a year.
reply
It feels good to hear all that. I really appreciate you support from the start. It has been quite a growth process for me to get to a place where I feel prepared to share things. I really enjoy it here and I am very helpful for for the future. Thank you for your encouragement and posting here.
reply
I will support the ~ alter_native territory with whatever I can.
On a light note, did you ever hear something like alternative partner for alternative days?😜
This territory feels like it isn't bound to one concept. If somebody writes good, you can put your bad in there. It's the freedom to choose, freedom to explore both sides of a coin are the picks for me.
Thankyou @DesertDave for being most visionary among all creatures at SN.πŸ˜œπŸ’˜
reply
Alternative partner for alternative days. I don't get it.
That was kind of the idea. To be as open as possible. Along my journey, I have learned that there is always another perspective and they are all valid. I want to hear them all.
reply
I am exactly holding the same opinion.
Alternative partners for alternative days is like taking doing dates with different people in alternative styles

Yeah... I have a suggestion, why not hold a 'Satsraiser' for the territory. Or maybe, we should think some daily fun games for better engagement and apply all those funds for lifetime purchase amount. Add your ideas to it.
reply
Are you on nostr?
That sounds awesome. Never heard of satraiser. Just asking for sats for something specific I suppose?
Yeah I been thinking about the same thing. I recently created one because I wanted to share news that maybe bitcoiners might not see about topics I care about.
At 100k sats a month it’s not such a bad thing
But 3 million sats im thinking is it worth it? The focus does switch to will I ever get the sats back?
But if I don’t I guess I paid for my own little spot on stacker news to share links and ideas to bitcoiners

Can someone start a territory of the same name as an existing one?

No, territory names are unique.
reply
That's good.
reply
Great question.
And if they did, wouldn't the one with the best stuff win out and there would be no incentive for a second.
reply
I have also been thinking about buying a territory but when I look at the analytics I'm not sure I can justify it. Need more users. Also, I haven't been on Nostr long but people seem to have limited specific interests. Or, maybe they just need someone to bring up different topics to talk about...3m stats kinda seems like a steal for a lifetime territory but I need to hang out longer and learn more.
reply
I feel like it is a great deal if it is around and continues to grow. I guess is just a bit of a gamble right now. It just seems like they have a great platform already, way ahead in the bitcoin world.
reply
A thought. When we pay monthly for a territory, a portion of that may apply toward the lifetime option, once we find our niche and choose to commit. I feel this would help a lot. Is this stupid? Sometimes my brain says stupid things.
reply
If there is an offer for 3 million sats for lifetime , it seems like intentions for territories on this site is long term thinking.
