The Interpreter, The Gambler and The Thief
It sounds like a Bob Dylan story song or a title for a hollywood blockbuster. Plot twist, they were all the same guy.
I can't wrap my head around this story of Shohei Ohtani's interpreter. Originally it was reported that Ohtani's interpreter had stolen 4M from him to cover gambling debt, but the US attorney's office announced he stole more than 16M from Ohtani. He could face up to 30 years in prison. Damn gambling addiction is no joke. I still find it hard to believe Ohtani didn't have any idea what was going on but that's what the US attorney's office is saying.
Speaking of baseball. The week has flown by and despite only half the action for the week having been completed thus far, the @MLBofficialscorer will be opening up week 3 pick later today.
We still have a couple weeks until the NFL draft. Is anyone interested in doing a stacker sports live chat during the first round?
You have until Sunday before game time 1pm est to get your pick in for round 1 of the NBA Playoff Survivor Pool. Don't forget it's a survivor pool so you may want to use a team that could go all the way in the last game of the season.
I joined a Masters pool on Nostr. I know very little about golf. In fact, I had my buddy who is an avid golfer and PGA to make my picks for me. I think SN is such a better and easier way to conduct a pool than nostr but nostr does solve the issue of potential legal hot water if the SN powers that be ever crack down on pools with a buy in. I haven't been running pools with buy-ins because I don't want to poke the bear but definitely this years NFL Survivor Pool will have a buy-in. I am thinking 20k sats this year but we are months away from that, so much time to discuss.
Sats for all, GR
Here's the survivor pool post: #488380.
I'm in full blown research mode trying to figure out my first pick. The reminder post will go out tomorrow morning, when we'll know all the relevant stakes and injury information.
The Kings and Cavs are both looking like teams who will be playing for something and who you wouldn't want to pick in the playoffs. The problem is you might not want to even trust them to beat bottom-feeding lottery teams.

Speaking of gambling. I am surprised freebitcoin never posted for the main event of UFC this week. I guess RBOA broke them on the last ufc event and they "threw in the towel".
reply
I have no idea how they choose their events.
reply
Ugh my bad. I meant to link it.
reply
No worries.
Are you still looking at the Kings?
reply
Probably kings or pacers.
reply
I forgot about the Pacers. If the Hawks aren't playing for anything, that's a great option.
With the Giannis injury, and the really strong play-in teams, there's going to be some weird incentives on Sunday.
reply
Depends what happens with Pacers tonight. They could lock up the 6 seed if they win and 76ers lose.
reply
They'd still be able to move ahead of Orlando, though, right? So, they should be playing for something no matter what else happens.
reply
True but I thought ensuring avoiding the play in would take precedence over trying to get 5 instead of 6.
Technically they can still move ahead of Cleveland too and those teams play tonight. So tonight will determine a lot.
Still don't know who to pick for the NBA pool. I'm tempted to pick the Spurs for tie breaker points, as they're playing the Pistons, but I'm screwed if they sit Wemby.
I think I'll just wait till Saturday evening or Sunday morning to make my pick.
reply
Wemby might block 20 shots trying to crack some DPOY ballots.
Don't expose yourself to that kind of risk, though. I think it's going to be pretty tough to just survive until the playoffs proper.

I like the 20k sats NFL survivor pool plan. I agree that this Ohtani story doesn't sit right. The guy had no problem stealing from his best friend, but he wouldn't bet on baseball?
reply
Yes, very odd. I think since the pool went so well last year it is good to up the stakes a bit but if we are going to have a re-buy again I don't want to go any higher than 20k. Want to make it a nice juicy pot but also accessible for everyone who wants to play.
Unless we did two. An entry level pool and a high rollers pool.
reply
Like those roped off baccarat tables in the old James Bond movies?
reply
Whatever the pleb stacker version of that looks like.

I entered two Masters pools on Draftkings (which I never pay money for since I don't want to end up like the interpreter, but enter every free contest I can; I'm currently at a little over $24 in winnings with them over the last year). It was, for all intents and purposes, a game of "select some random names and hope."
Given how I've done in contests in which I do know something about the sport, I'm not sure my odds are any lower, to be honest.

I haven't followed golf in years and haven't played in probably twenty even though I live a 5 minute walk from a golf course. My son was never really interested in golf but my daughter would like to try it. My wife played a lot of golf with her dad when she was young so maybe my daughter will be the golfer in the family.

I tried taking a golf course in college and quickly realized I was so bad at it, I had to drop before I flunked. If I'm not trying to tap the ball past a windmill or into a clown's mouth, I'm hopeless. Not surprisingly, my daughter did not end up with any interest in the sport.
