You could. This is why I think low cost mining equipment is important.

You don't feel like you have to mine 24/7. It is such a small cost that it lets you learn and heat your house.

vs.

buying a multi thousand dollar mining rig and feeling like you need to run all the time to justify the purchase.

I have never rented hash rate but no reason it could not work.

My guess is that lightning withdraws might cause some people who are renting the hash rate out to just mine for them self.
