zap.store 0.1.0 is here!
For months I have been dreaming of a better app store, frustrated by big tech's permissioned bs, GPG's complexities, and Obtainium's reliance on centralized services and poor UX.
Here's the first (very alpha) iteration of zap.store, a permissionless app store leveraging the nostr social graph.
✔ Android only (for now! Desktop coming soon) ✔ Obtainium drop-in replacement (smaller catalog but growing) ✔ App releases are signed/curated by this account, as developers start self-signing ✔ Web of trust check before installing an app
(SHA-256 hash of the APK version 0.1.0 is 8540bd492064c17d83bcdc6d2a463c2aea46f13c2b0d13b8a96023df95bd0c9d)
Good idea. I will check this out.

Let me know what you think of it! A ton more apps coming soon
reply
I definitely will. I like Obtanium, but yours has the potential to be better.
reply
Heavy Obtainium user here (at least until today!). The idea is good but their UX not really, in that regard I'm striving to make it 10x better.
reply
what's wrong with using f-driod? The readme.md was blank on your github
reply
Amazing work.
I’m sure you already know with it being an alpha release - would be great to see a bit more responsive behaviour for mobile. Text is taking-off into space.
Do let the stackers know if you need any help on the project.
reply
Gracias vecino! Yeah, I think you refer to the mobile site, that was fixed today
reply
A+ for the name.

I just want to say again what a great idea this is, @franzap. The fact that it's nostr was a great idea . I have it installed on my graphene OS pixel. I can't wait until it's a full Obtanium replacement.

Working hard on the UX! Please keep the feedback coming

You did it! Man you always have great ideas and make slick UIs. This makes me wish I was on Android.

reply
Updated mutiny with this no problem! Pretty slick
reply
Great to know! Thanks!
reply
Amazing! This should definitely serve the purpose. We badly require one permission less app store for privacy and decentralisation.
reply
Slowly but surely
reply
cool!

this is so great to see. thank you. fyi when I click on the link at bottom of zap.store page it takes me to nostrudel login page and can't see post.
reply
I’ll check it out. Thanks. 🙏

This is a very good idea, I hope to see more updates about it, there are few apps yet, right?
reply
Yes, in order to bootstrap I'm scraping APKs from Github - that's what you see in the app. This until developers start signing their own apps and publishing to different relays, that's when it will flourish
reply
I see, it looks good, hopefully, you succeed, we need more decentralized solutions!
reply
Looks impressive.
reply
Thank you!

nice work
reply
why does an app store ask for login?
reply
So you can use your web of trust. It is not mandatory
reply
Did you know F-Droid supports IPFS?
reply
So? Releases are signed by F-Droid
reply
If the dev releases reproducible builds it will be signed by both F-Droid and the developer.
reply
Sure you but you need developers releasing reproducible builds and people attesting to them, definitely not the norm
reply
Looks good!
But can you translate this for normies?
It uses nostr to establish identity, linking release artifacts to social profiles validated by the web of trust. This enables secure installs, a new app discoverability layer and developer monetization via zaps.
reply
For who don't know, you can add repo to Obtainum on Android to get automatic updates directly from the source. 👍🏻
