pull down to refresh

I'm starting off my NBA post mortem series with the Thunder, because they're a favorite of the largely Canadian audience here and because I think they have one of the simpler roads ahead.

Young Team, Open Window

As with our final four, it's odd for such a young team to be legitimately near contending for a title, but they clearly are. Titles are won by top 5 players with good injury luck and OKC had both.
I whole-heartedly agree with the criticism Richard Jefferson expressed about how they blew their opportunity this year, by not doing more at the trade deadline. They already have too many good young players, so what's the point of keeping that hoard of draft picks?
Would they have been more competitive with Alex Caruso, Mikal Bridges, or Daniel Gafford? They had the resources to get any of them.
However, the advantage of going into the playoffs with the guys they had is that they learned a lot about what needs to change: Chet's too small and Giddy ain't it.
They are really onto something, though, and the core of SGA, Chet, and Dort is a great starting point.

Roadmap

OKC has sufficient cap space and trade assets to basically do whatever they want. I think the core considerations are culture fit and complementarity with SGA and Chet. For that reason, I think most star players should be off their board, although a reunion with Paul George might make sense.
I heard Lauri Markkanen floated as the perfect fit and that makes a lot of sense. He should be available and he's a good rebounder who won't clog the paint. He's also not such a big star that they need to worry about his ego.
Other than that, everyone can always use more shooting. I'd look into acquiring Duncan Robinson from the Heat. He's as dangerous of a shooter as there is and he's a great teammate and his length gives him positional versatility.
How does this look for next year's playoff team?
C: Chet F: Lauri F: Duncan G: Dort G: SGA
Who should I cover next?
I think OKC management didn't think they were actual contenders this year in a stacked western conference. They wanted to roll with what they had into the playoffs and see how it played out and make adjustments from there. It just seems like a bad move now because they secured the one seed and were one shot away from the West finals, but I don't mind the strategy. They needed to see how SGA, Chet, Dort, Giddy were going to look in the playoffs.
I was really high on Chet early in the season but I don't know if he wore down due to his slender frame or the league figured him out. I do think he has a weakness to his game in terms of physicality that either needs to be addressed by putting some weight and muscle on him or adding complimentary pieces to help him out. OKCs rebounding was inconsistent. Some games they were ok but other games they got dominated on the glass. I think they need to address that.
I really like the idea of Markkanen and or Robinson.
I am looking forward to seeing how OKC brass augment the roster to make a run at it next year.
Great first post mortem post.

I didn't want them to break up the core at the deadline, they did need to see what they had.
However, I firmly believed they made a mistake by not trading some picks for Caruso or some other awesome role player. It's also important to see how the core works with those kind of championship caliber role players.

We know OKC is likely looking into adding another big to the roster. One that can rebound but also be able to space the floor and make shots. That's why Markkanen looks like a very good fit. But are there any other alternative guys that you guys think might work?
How about Vucevic? Better rebounder and good post defender. Put Vuc at the 5 and Chet at the 4. Chet is tall and all, yes, but I think he is too skinny and lightweight to play the 5 in the NBA. Just throwing ideas around.
Also, in terms of not adding a big at the trade deadline, I agree they wanted to see how these young guys will do in a high pressure playoff situation. Having success in the regular season doesn't necessarily mean success in the post season. But they will definitely be making moves this summer.

I was thinking about Kevin Love as a role player option. He basically only does three things anymore (rebound, outlet pass, shoot 3's) and they're exactly the right three things for OKC. He's also regarded as one of the best mentors and locker room guys in the league.

A good veteran in that locker room would be very beneficial.
