pull down to refresh

If ever we had a roll-it-back team, it's this Denver squad. Coming into the playoffs, they were widely regarded as the best team and they very nearly advanced.
My sense is that they got caught off-guard by a young hungry Wolves team that they could have beaten and likely would beat if they played the series over.
However, it does seem like the gap between them and the other Western Conference contenders is smaller than was generally believed and some of those teams are likely to improve more next season.

Tinkering Around the Edges

In my opinion, Denver's starting 5 + Cristian Braun is the most coherently constructed rotation in the league. The problems are lack of depth and a lack of top end talent other than Jokic.
I was messing around with the trade machine, without much success, so this might not be easy for Denver. Somehow, though, they need to replace Reggie Jackson with a better backup point guard who fits well with Jokic. Ideally, it would be someone who could also share the backcourt with Murray. Then they need to hope the young guys develop.

Big Swing

I'm hearing people talk about trading MPJ or KCP. The problem I see is that those guys are probably more valuable to Denver, because of their fit around Jokic, than they would be to anyone else. Short of somehow turning them into KD (salaries match, btw), I don't see what would move the needle.
Would this be a title favorite?
C: Jokic F: Gordon F: Durant G: Braun G: Murray
I'd say so.
How do you think Denver should approach this offseason?
If I am Denver I am not sure I want to trade quality core adjacent pieces (I don't want to call them depth pieces) for Durant who is probably going to be hurt or worn down once playoffs roll around. Their bench really hurt them in that series against the Twolves and I think you are right if they played that series again the Nuggets win it. They started the playoffs slow but were able to beat the Lakers despite not playing that well. Not so lucky against a good defensive team like Minny when they didn't show up in the first two games.
I don't think they need much improvement other than maybe some better bench options and knowing they aren't destined to be a dynasty, they have to earn it every single game.

That's my preferred approach, too, but I was really surprised when I saw that the salaries matched perfectly in that KD trade. I do think they need an athletic almost 7-foot sharpshooter in that spot and KD's the only other one.

Minny didn’t deserve to win but I hate that the non foul call on the out bounds review cost them this game. NBA can’t allow playoff games to be decided like that. Great shot by Luka though.
reply
That's been a horrible rule ever since they started doing replay.
That might be Minnesota's "Tuck Rule" game.
reply
It’s unfortunate but they didn’t deserve that win regardless the way Ant man and KAT played. 9-33?
reply
I don’t know if minny can win this game let alone the series is Ant Man is going to be simply ordinary.
reply
They had a shot. Crazy game.
reply
They definitely would be favourites with KD. I just don't trust he will stay healthy and be around come playoff time. Or won't have some lingering injuries that have him playing at 70%
reply
Kevin can’t stay healthy
reply
If Durant were willing to take MPJ's role and be the 3rd option, he probably could coast through the season and still be a major upgrade, even if he's only 70%.
The glaring concern is if he's just out with an injury, because the remaining team is incredibly thin.
reply
That's my line of thinking. If you are trading important pieces for him and he goes out then you are really thin.
reply
Murray can’t stay healthy
reply
Murray can’t stay healthy. They need a reliable third scorer
reply
How do you think they should go about that?
reply
They need a good backup for Murray so he can rest more
I don’t know which players are available
reply
I agree, but no one came to mind for me either.
