I almost missed this, and for that I can only apologise. But I am here! And I bring you!
Backstreet boys
Vs
Steel Panther!
Let's go 💪
reply
I'm going to go with Steel Panther, totally reworked this classic and they own it. Brilliant
reply
Cheers for providing another link, I didn't realise the YouTube police blocked the one I sent. 😂 It can be so hit and miss.
And I agree, I love Panthers take on it, they're such a hilarious band.
reply
So funny you threw down Steel Panther 😆
reply
They're hilarious, and so much fun live.
reply
Who did it better?
reply
Wicked cover but Dolly is the one for this song.
reply
There's an SF writer named Nick Mamatas who has argued that all White Stripes songs are terrible unless they're covers of other people's works, or if it's someone else covering a White Stripes original. While I don't fully agree, I do tend to love any cover they do, and this is no exception.
(That said, I always vote for Dolly on this song, no matter how good the cover.)
reply
I was never a big white stripes fan but they have some good tracks. I don't think all their songs are terrible unless they are covers but if the crux of his argument is that they are overrated, I might agree with that.
reply
Yeah, I think he's going a little more for hyperbole and that they're overhyped; I still listen to some of their original songs when they come on.
reply
I never really understood their massive popularity but I don't get today's music either so what do I know
reply
I'm going to go with the original, good cover though
reply
Very cool cover

Thunder - Gimme Shelter

These guys have done some amazing cover versions and this is one of my absolute faves of their version of the Rolling Stones's, Gimme Shelter.
reply
I know you love your Thunder 0b1 and they did not disappoint. Wicked cover.
reply
You know me 😆. They've done a lot of covers but this one has always been an absolute standout for me. They don't just cover it they take it to an extra level.
reply
We have our winner for the week
reply
Thank you @BTC_Bellzer, glad you enjoyed this cracker of a track from Thunder.
Looking forward to next weeks cover post.
reply
I've not heard of Thunder before but I agree they crush this cover
reply
I'm slightly biased on this but have a look in to them. Start with the Backstreet Symphony album, their first album. It's probably their best and one which was hard to live up to. Almost like coming out with a Hysteria or Slippery When Wet as your debut. The follow up albums are a treat and didn't disappoint. The songs have a great depth to them, especially in the later albums. Danny has one of the best voices, such a range. Very soulful. I also shared Danny and Luke's (lead guitarist and main songwriter) version of "I can't stand the rain"
reply
Great song from the Stones, but the Thunder version nails it.

Richard Marx - Miami 2017

He just nails this one, absolutely brilliant.
reply
Whoa! I love Billy's song, and have been a fan of a lot of the stuff Marx has done, but never encountered this version! Great find!
reply
This was another good 1
reply
It's one of my absolute favourites from both of these legends. I first heard this when Billy did a concert for the BBC's Old Great Whistle Test show. This was recorded by Richard Marx in 1993, and released as a bonus track on international versions of his album Paid Vacation. So we got this in the UK but probably not the US. Spotify only has the regular US album, no extras, so the only place you'll find it is on YT or if you have the CD.
reply
Here's Billy on that BBC concert from 1978. One of the first shows we ever recorded on our Ferguson Video star VHS recorder. We kept that tape for decades, the concert is just brilliant.
reply
They let you bring a recorder to tape the show?
reply
We taped it from the TV on our newly acquired VHS video recorder.
Now you've got me thinking of what it would have been like to have been at that concert. Even then in '78 he had all these massive songs, many musicians would have dined out on them for the rest of their careers, he was only just starting.

Richard Marx absolutely nails this! Awesome awesome cover, slightly pips the original for me.
reply
I have to agree, but it feels a little like blasphemy to say it 😄. The original was from one of his very early albums, maybe lacked a bit of production. Richard just seems to bring it alive more and the piano is just awesome.

The Chicks - Landslide

Fabulous version of the Fleetwood Mac / Stevie Nicks classic, Landslide. Giving it a country feel.
reply
They did really well with this, but Stevie just has a way with a song. Such a talented artist.
reply
Gotta go OG here
reply
The original Really it's just a Stevie track with Lindsey accompanying. Beautiful

Bowes & Morley - I Can't Stand The Rain

Danny & Luke's version of Ann Peebles 1973 soul classic.
reply
That's a brilliant cover! Sounds fantastic, I'm going to lean cover here aswell.
reply
I vote cover again
reply
The original from Ann Peebles.
reply
reply
Fun track to listen to, I do enjoy good mashups.
reply
Who does the original version?
reply
I don't know man. This one's is a mashup. So, there are various originals.
reply
Blondie is Blondie, of course.
But Dolly is a legend, and still crushing it at her age.
reply
This is a tough one. Dolly does this really really well... But Blondie... It's Blondie yaknow! This is a Blondie track and she takes it here again.
reply
As BTC_Bellzer says, surprisingly good. I imagined it was going to be horrendous. I can feel that there's lots of post production work gone in to that track. Like to hear her sing it live.
reply
Sorry, didn't actually vote. Got to go original
reply
That was a somewhat surprisingly good cover but I have to vote original still
reply
I feel for you by Prince
The cover by Chaka Khan https://youtu.be/YW0sxgYAmLM
reply
Chaka Khan absolutely nails this. But Prince is such an iconic musician. I'm going to lean Prince here but it's very close.
reply
I vote cover because that will definitely be the most 80s thing I see today
reply
True! Prince's version is from around '78.

Def Leppard - Hangin' On The Telephone

The Blondie track shared earlier reminds me of this from Def Leppard's Yeah cover versions album. It's one of the best from that album.
reply
I'm with Bellzer on this, I really didn't expect this from Def Leppard. Awesome cover.
reply
Have to think about this one but I definitely didn't expect that from Def Leppard.
reply
The original from Blondie - Hanging On The Telephone
reply
After last night's game 2 OT win I'm feeling pretty good.
reply
I love this metal cover! Just more meat on the bone! Sounds wicked without ruining the original.
