This is a thread for random discussions that gets posted everyday at 5am central.
Tell us what you're doing today, ask questions, or vent about your life. Whatever you want, let it rip!
I’ve removed free comments. I think the most foolproof solution to comment spam long term is going to be to making images and links more expensive in comments. Such that if links/images are in fact improving the quality of your comment, you can expect to be tipped an equivalent amount and be rewarded by the algo.
Something like:
  • links are 10 sats each
  • images are 100 sats each
We’ll do this kind of thing slowly, cautiously, and with fair warning, but judging from other platforms who are forced to solve this with moderation, this is the best thing we can do without moderation.
Maybe also these things are cheaper for trusted users. Overall it seems like the move is to experiment with new tools rather than reinvent the broken wheel everywhere else uses.

Are there any details on how Holepunch actually works? How are DHT nodes incentivized? On a similar front I continue to be amazed how well syncthing works and yet how annoying that UX is :)

Hey @k00b and @kr, on the last SN podcast, KR had a great idea about companies AMA !
Let's do this! Invite bitcoin related companies to present their product/service and have an AMA. Amazing idea!

Saw this line in the newsletter:
Job board is pretty sparse. For as little as $10/mo, post a job and reach the 60k bitcoiners browsing SN.
I think a ~business sub could also be useful as income for Stacker News and a place for people to advertise their Bitcoin-friendly businesses, online stores, websites or projects.
Currently you can post a link to your business or project, but it would be in the top posts for 1-2 days, then disappear.
A paid business ad could display for x days in the ~business sub. As it would be text-only (no banners) in a specialized sub, and focus on Bitcoin-friendly businesses, it wouldn't be spammy.
(This is a different idea than ~classifieds, which would host peer-to-peer product sales, instead of a business directory.)
reply
This is chaos. Maybe it's time to increase costs for posting (not commenting). Or increase costs after a certain number of items a day.
Where is this sudden influx of people coming from?
reply
Yeah probably increase posting costs, remove free posts/comments.
Commenting can stay low but the new spam is in comments.
reply
IMO, 1 free post would be nice. (I don't know if "Login with Lightning" requires a full node. If it also works with lite wallets such as Blue Wallet, you could require it to get the 1 free post credit. Spammers probably won't spend time to create a new wallet for every link.)
x sats may be a symbolic amount (less than $0.01), but depending on circumstances, it may be difficult for people to acquire their first sats, so a free post (and the opportunity to earn some tips from it) could help to onboard people to Bitcoin and Stacker News, without barriers.
(In some places, it may be easy to buy a $10 Amazon gift card from a local store and sell it on Robosats, or use an Azteco vendor or KYC-free Bitcoin ATM, but many countries don't have these options and it can be difficult to find a local cash by mail/cash in person seller for low amounts.)

We knew this day would come, eventually, for SN.
Now, how will SN prevent it so that SN remains enjoyable?
reply
I guess it's free real estate for the time being. One solution might be charging more for links and images...dk, but i believe in free market principles, and we have the power of money natively present as part of the internet now, so time will tell. Good test of incentives and free market principles

Unlike previous weeks, I watch the same content every day. I see a bit monotonous the site, that there are new people is good but it is annoying to read the same thing several times.
I would like an algorithm change, that publishing more expensive. Fewer unnecessary posts and more participation.

Clue 3. Feeling pretty confident about overall solution method and I think I have 1 and 2 figured out, just not sure how to get the answer out of 3

Are the color squares at the bottom intentional, or just automatically generated with DALL-E?
Btw, nice photo editing skills to put all of these together. Looks sick.

Are more than that, disguised in other stuff. I am tired of shitcoining. Is sucking energy and move attention from things that really matter.
Yes, many here will say that I am a "toxic maxi", but I don't fucking care. After 10+ years in Bitcoinlandia I saw so many shitcoining that I am really tired about it and that's why I do not support it anymore. Those who enter in Bitcoinlandia in the last 2 years doesn't know how is to support shitcoiners all these years.

I think speaking the truth about Bitcoin is important in leading them in the right direction. Just the other day, you were on here claiming you knew 4 people that owned 6 million bitcoin combined. Untrue things like that have the ability to lead people astray. You can be a 10 year bitcoin maximalist, but let's stick to the facts, shall we?
Sigs or it didn't happen.
reply
He's larping again, which is as annoying as shitcoining tbh.
reply
Can you prove that what my eyes saw, is not true? No. So STFU or didn't happen.
Speaking truth is a bitcoiner must do. I also live under the Natural Law. Do you know what natural law is?
  1. Do not do harm
  2. Do not steal
  3. Do not kill
  4. Do not lie, stay in honor
If you don't believe what I just related about those holders, it is your problem, not mine. I mention that, not because to brag about their holdings, but to show the rest of the new users that not only Saylor is the "biggest" holder. Holding a large amount of BTC is NOT important, important is what are you doing with them. And Saylor, as many want to believe, he doesn't have the real good intentions to do. Listen all his talks and you will find out his "plans" to do with his stash. Not so good... THIS IS A WARNING, to all people to listen carefully all words out there and don't follow blindly.
reply
"Can you prove that what my eyes saw, is not true? No."
Ah - the religious standpoint. I guess I just need "Faith" in your outrageous claim. Your point is moot. It is not provable, nor true, and it is, frankly, ridiculous. Just to entertain your fantasy a bit more.. let's say you "personally saw" these 2-6 million bitcoin back in 2012 like you claim. There was a TOTAL SUPPLY of 8-9 million coins back then. So you saw someone who had a wallet of 2 million coins, or 25% of all bitcoins at the time? And you claimed multiple people had that many coins, meaning you personally confirmed (witnessed) 80-90% of the supply. It is verifiable (with actual signatures, unlike you) that way more than 20% of the supply at the time was in the hands of thousands of people. So, I don't believe you, and no one else here does. Please stop.
On a more serious note, I actually own 22 million bitcoin personally. Can you prove me wrong? No. So stop getting so angry at me clearly telling the truth!!!!!!!!!11111 I'm telling the truthtthh!!!!11!!!!!!11!! It's a warning to tell people that numbrber of bitcoins no matter!! im' vary smart!!!
I want to underatand how Github works. I've followed a couple guides in the past and they felt like they skipped steps or asumed previous coding knowledge which I don't have. Any noob friendly guide out there? Also if someone has free time and is happy to teach for a couple hours I can open a 1 million sats channel to you as a "payment".
Please?

Git clone linktorepositoryhere Cd linktoreposityhere

  • git is a system that lets you track changes of your files on your computer. Git is mainly used for textual files, like computer program source codes. The beauty is that you can then send the changes over internet to your friends or even publish those updates to websites like github for others to comment on and see.
  • github is a website that lets people publicly share and collaborate on open source applications. It's the most popular one for this, but there are other options (like GitLab), even ones that you can run on your own (Gitea)
The way it works is developers are writing source codes on their computer. When they make some nice group of changes, they "commit" it with git app (still on their computer). Then they export this "commit" to github for other developers to review (the thing is confusingly called "PR" - Pull Request... since you are requesting that commit to be pulled into the main sourcecode branch) and then the maintainer of the project on github can apply the PR to the main branch and then release the new version of the project.
(obviously I'm simplifying some stuff and not being exactly precise here)

I suppose you meant Git?

Yeah, that would be the next step after understanding what each section of the web is for 😅

Want to run this by SN:
I noticed more content on YT algorithm coming up that has to do with libertarianism, and that may just have to do with some of my reading / searches. But after a bit I also noticed it's really specific to Mises caucus in the US, within the Libertarian party. The same week, I saw conservative pundits bash libertarian ideas almost out of nowhere (non-sequitur) during a Q&A period.
None of this is new, and I'm willing to submit it could be the Baader–Meinhof effect (frequency illusion), but my thesis is this -- there is going to be a big split in US conservatism between current big R republicans and people who want to go more Ron Paul libertarian. This will split the vote down the road and make it way easier to for Democrats to win votes and keep pushing for big government (despite dismal current administration and policies).
Thoughts and h8 welcome.
reply
"libertarianism" and "libertarian party" are terms used ONLY in US.
anarcho-capitalism is the way to go forward and respecting the natural law
Anything that has a "party" is a trap.
reply
That's an interesting thought! I have noticed a lot of Mises Caucus content lately as well. But i do want to throw in that the US Libertarian Party recently had a massive overhaul in leadership. They've completely changed their messaging to appeal to a younger, millennial audience and they've stepped up their social media game. I do believe that this is net positive over the long term.
My thesis at the moment is that we will have big government right-wing statists in office for the rest of the decade, as a backlash to this current woke "Blue wave". 2024 and 2028 are probably going to swing Republican. Quite possibly another Trump term followed by a DeSantis term.
I've been analysing some demographic data lately, and it does appear that the 2032 election in the US will be unique. It will be the first time that Gen Z and Millennial voters outnumber the older generations. I see this as a huge opportunity for the LP Mises Caucus. Spending the next 8 years on great messaging might actually lead to a strengthened LP among Millennials and Gen Z (& Bitcoiners who prefer small government). The fight is to prevent radicalizing of Gen Z into communist and Maoist ideologies (the beginnings of which are woke culture).
reply
Oi m8, don't worry about this 😂😂 I doubt that woke culture is the beginning of literal Communism or Maoism. Is looks like that because of how Twitter sorts controversy to the top. But most Zoomers are reasonable human beings 😂😂
People are dumb ☝🏻but not that dumb ☝🏻
reply
I hope that you're right and I like your optimism :)
reply
Normally I would say that the ways of the algorithm are mysterious. But I have been getting non-Bitcoin libertarian content flushed onto my main page on YouTube and Twitter out of nowhere as well. That is not at all the content I am consuming normally - indeed far from it.
Normally I am not that quick to jump to conclusions or Conspiracies but this time it really feels coordinated and sudden. My guess is that this is a political campaign and some service provider has some kind of strategy on how to game the algorithm(s). I see no other explanation.
But maybe it's just a coincidence that it happened to both of us and it's just some viral content that is dragging side-content through the whole internet with it?
reply
It reminds me of YAF and Daily Wire popularity surge during the Trump/Hillary election. I know there is an audience for that content but people also def mobilized a lot of money on youth/campus political messaging.
