In the 11th century, a secret order emerged in the mountains of Iran, leaving a legacy of mystery and fear that endures to this day. Founded by Hassan-i Sabbah, the Nizari Order, popularly known as the Assassins, became famous for their daring missions and skill in infiltrating and eliminating strategic targets. Hassan is considered the first Islamic terrorist.
Hassan-i Sabbah, a fervent Ismaili, established the order in 1090 by taking control of the fortress of Alamut, located in the mountains of northern Iran. Alamut became the Assassins’ headquarters, from where Hassan-i Sabbah coordinated their activities and expanded their influence. The fortress’ strategic location allowed the order to control trade routes and maintain an impenetrable defensive position.
Members of the order underwent rigorous physical and mental training. They were taught how to disguise themselves, use poisons, and eliminate their targets with surgical precision. The indoctrination included a mixture of religious teachings and guerrilla tactics.
The Assassin order quickly became a feared force in the Middle East. Their victims included political, military, and religious leaders who were considered a threat to their cause. One of their preferred methods of assassination was the use of daggers, carried out in a public and theatrical manner to send a clear message to their enemies. The Assassins’ ability to infiltrate heavily guarded fortifications and eliminate specific targets without being captured fueled their myth and terror.
One of the most famous episodes involving the Assassins was the assassination of Conrad of Montferrat, King of Jerusalem, in 1192. Two men disguised as Christian monks approached Conrad and stabbed him to death. The boldness and precision of the attack reinforced the order’s reputation as masters of assassination.
The power and influence of the Assassins did not go unnoticed. Local rulers and European crusaders repeatedly attempted to destroy the order. However, it was not until the mid-13th century that the Assassins encountered a formidable adversary: the Mongol Empire. Under the command of Hulagu Khan, the Mongols launched a brutal campaign against the Nizaris, destroying Alamut in 1256 and crushing the order.
