Yea, it's a thing, and I think it happens on most phone cameras not just iPhone. I think the proper term is lens flare. It also seems to only appear when you use the main camera on the iPhone and don't show up when you use the wide angel (0.5) camera.
Thanks. This pic was actually from last summer but it was late June so same time of year. I was walking on a small path that connects two different trails and could see part of the golf course through the trees with a nice sunset in the background so had to snap a pic.
