I would like to make a recap of all known PoS (Point of Sale) systems with integrated Bitcoin payments, for small or big merchants, custodial or self-custodial, "ready to go" (no need any other complex installations)

PoS

Definition - A simple UI where the user can add items, prices, stock, images and easily charge in BTC, directly from that PoS UI.
  1. BTCPay Server PoS App - one of the biggest and well known self-custodial PoS
  2. LNbits PoS - PWA or mobile app (useful for tablets), offline shop, TPoS online and offline device, self-custodial and/or shareable instance
  3. Zeus LN PoS - integrated simple PoS into your mobile / tablet device, working with remote or integrated LN node. Keep in mind, the embedded LND node can be run in persistent mode and you could have a great simple solution for a small shop with an "always online" LN node connected to your PoS, self-custodial PoS
  4. Breez Wallet PoS - simple PoS UI in the app, self-custodial PoS

Light PoS (payment terminals)

Worth mentioning OTHER systems that are NOT real PoS but could be used together with other PoS systems. It means you can input the amount and get a QR code for the LN invoice and can be very useful in small shops that want to start accepting BTC payments with their already in place systems.
  • Opago Pay - easy to use offline device that fw payments to your own wallet / LN address, the Bitcoin PoS for boomers
  • CoinOS - very simple, non-KYC custodial account, web app with integrated swaps onchain-LN.
  • Blink Merchants - easy UI for small merchants, custodial, with fiat conversion
  • Wallet of Satoshi - simple integrated PoS into the app, custodial
  • Ibex Pay - custodial, with conversion to fiat
A separate mention is Odoo ERP system, but need previous installation / configuration. But this one is a full ERP system that can be used with Bitcoin payments directly.
Do you know more systems / solutions? Please add them in comments.

Created with chatgpt? When people will really do PoW?

This is an important article. Many times per week I am at a new place / restaurant buying something. Every time I pay, I always ask if they accept Lightning payments. They always say no, all but one didn’t know what it was (I’m based out of North Carolina). I’ll ask to talk to the owner and explain the cost difference between Lightning and credit cards.
I believe it is our responsibility to do so.
I don’t ever want to convert BTC to fiat. BTC is useless if we can’t trade it for goods and services.
reply
explain the cost difference between Lightning and credit cards.
Don't do that "cost comparison". Is kinda meaningless.
  • LN is The Payment Network for Bitcoin - YES, as VISA/MC is the payment network for fiat too.
  • LN have also fees, but are the way around, payer is paying the fees, not the merchant (in VISA case). And sometimes in fiat terms could be even higher than VISA.
  • LN is THE FINAL SETTLEMENT, not like VISA that takes up to 6 days to settle. And over LN there's NO CHARGE BACK ! This is key difference between LN and VISA.
  • LN is Bitcoin. Not a token, not a shitcoin, not something else. Over LN is always transacting sats (bitcoin) using HTLCs.
  • LN is self-custody (if you use proper wallets)
  • LN is private (no matter what haters says) and P2P.
reply
I don’t appreciate the command. But thank you very much for the info. Final settlement is huge! I’ll definitely be adding that in when I mention Lightning. Yes, user pays the fee, that is a good point. I have only seen a few cents at most, where a CC company will charge 3% or $3.00 for just a $100 purchase.
Also, Matthew Kratter recommended offering to pay 110% for services done on your property or for any services/goods if they take BTC. I think this is a great idea. One could also give 10% discounts to customers who pay in BTC.
reply
One could also give 10% discounts to customers who pay in BTC.
I pay groceries and my beers in sats with a 10% discount (because I pay in BTC). See more about an adoption story I wrote some time ago.
When I onboard merchants I always tell them:
  • charge 5-10% more if customer pays with VISA (make them pay and feel the pain)
  • charge 3-5% more if they pay with bank transfer
  • charge with discount up to 10-15% if they pay with BTC. If you hold those sats, you will not regret it.

We got custom modules built to integrate Odoo PoS and eCommerce to work with Bitcoin payments. Do check out https://www.milightningrod.com/
reply
how much could cost (just quick estimation) a full system integration like this (without hardware) ?
reply
Hi, the core modules are free open-source and on github so you don't have to pay if you want to do the set-up yourself.
Would love to walk you through setup if the readme isn't enough.
But if you need help with a deployment, there is a service for $500-$1000 where we will help you setup you system and menu, and provide training to your staff.
reply
Also worth mentioning we are working on bash scripts and kubernetes scripts if anyone wants to try their luck.

Might be a topic for different (but related) thread, the various systems that let people spend sats, even if the merchant doesn't receive sats. Still noteworthy for individuals that want to start living on a Bitcoin Standard more easily.
A few that come to mind:
  • MoneyBadger (formerly known as CryptoConvert) in South Africa that lets people pay with Lightning in all the Pick n Pay stores in the country.
  • Bitcoin Jungle lets you send sats across the local mobile money network.
  • Tando.me (their Geyser page with more info) similar to Bitcoin Jungle, but in Kenya, allows anyone to spend sats anywhere in the entire country by tapping into the M-Pesa mobile money network that 95% of the population already uses.
  • CoopPay an app offered by Pouch.ph that allows payment of bills using bitcoin.
I also heard BTCSessions talking about another similar option in Prague, Czech Republic but I didn't catch the name of the integrations provider.

the custodial wallet LifPay also has a simple and easy to use PoS with a Templates feature to sell digital goods
reply
ah yes, worth mention it. Is not a real PoS but yes you can customize the payment templates. Thanks.
reply
Thanks for the share on this! Many people I have transacted with accepting bitcoin simply just took out their bitcoin wallet and would click receive on their lightning wallet (strike or bitcoin beach).
At what point would you say someone should shift from this casual type of acceptance to a POS type? What are the strong benefits to switch?
reply
Thanks for the learning Darth! I'm starting a new business of perfumes and Deodorants. I will definitely require one in a few months from now.
reply
Great post, Darth! Will you please suggest one best POS for India?
Consider cost and effectivenes!

Is LNbits not valid anymore? They have (or had) both, the installable OS and various DIY terminals also available on their shop.
The most impressive was Android Point of Sale Device that I assume is what later inspired Bitcoinize
reply
Is LNbits not valid anymore?
What do you mean? Lnbits is just fine. But DO NOT USE THE DEMO SERVER, RUN YOUR OWN LNBITS INSTANCE. Yes Bitcoinize device is based on those LNbits TPoS but I think they also use BTCPay.
reply
WordPress self-hosted sites could also be set with a PoS plugin, w/ integrated BTC payment gateway it's also a valid alternative to be used on mobile and tablet.

thank you for this amaizing artcle

I'm not a fan of the acronym PoS.

Do you know some PoS (point of sale) systems for POS (proof of stake) ? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
reply
I know quite a few butcher shops 😂

those have steak not stake 😂

These guys have built a good purpose-built product that's integrating nicely with the Boltcard LN NFC cards, now easily provisioned at scale through BTCPay servers these days.
