Argentina's president Javier Milei will now seek membership in NATO. By his own admission, he cannot remain neutral here at this point in the face of war. So is he a libertarian war hero now, or what?

What does the "N" in NATO stand for again?
reply
Nobody here has been sticking to any rules or pacts for a long time now. For me, the n stands for napalm

Ukraine really needs help. Where does Argentina get the money?
reply
USD credit lines?
reply
This seems to me to be more of an international political move than anything else. Argentina is not in a position to spend a lot of money on the military.
reply
right. nevertheless, they have announced that they want to buy F16 fighters and pass them on to Ukraine, including the training. this can only be financed through new credit lines.
reply
Americans pockets are helping Ukraine war
reply
Yes, the europeans too, and it shouldn't be for nothing.
reply
the Europeans will soon have completely different problems. just look at the recession that is only just beginning

How can Argentina join NATO if it's "North Atlantic Treaty Organization"? Member states of NATO are not obligated to come to the defence of territory south of the Tropic of Cancer. Best they could become is a global partner.
reply
The books are closed. Not accepting any new members
reply
Not really. But new potential NATO members are limited to Europe.
See Article 10 of the Treaty:
The Parties may, by unanimous agreement, invite any other European State in a position to further the principles of this Treaty and to contribute to the security of the North Atlantic area to accede to this Treaty. Any State so invited may become a Party to the Treaty by depositing its instrument of accession with the Government of the United States of America. The Government of the United States of America will inform each of the Parties of the deposit of each such instrument of accession.
reply
what is "instrument of accession"?
reply
Formal document, where state asks that it wants to join NATO. Name likely comes from partition of India in 1947 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrument_of_Accession).
reply
US Senate must approve with 2/3 super majority
reply
This is no longer a North Atlantic defensive club.
reply
This is no longer a North Atlantic defensive club.
reply
See Article 10 of the Treaty.
reply
and every member is supposed to spend 2% of GDP on defense
only 6 of 32 members are meeting this provision
reply
Yes, but that's different, that agreement between member states is not part of the Treaty document. It's just promise by countries.
reply
It is an offensive club devoid of any legitimacy after the Warsaw pact was dissolved. Warmongers keep NATO alive and justify their bloated bureaucracy by making up new villains to bomb. The only hope for peace is to sat no to NATO and US and starve the beast until it dies
reply
And there will be no peace in Europe if nobody will seriously confront Russia.
reply
devoid of any legitimacy after the Warsaw pact was dissolved
NATO was established six years before Warsaw pact (1949 v 1955).
Can you give examples of "making up new villains to bomb"? Most NATO missions have been either response to attacks or UN sanctioned missions.

So now we know he was really a fraud, libertarianism doesn't really go with warmongers ...defending Ukrainian democracy is a joke considering before the war Ukraine was the most corrupt country in Europe and its democratically elected president had to run for his life in 2014. For sure Argentinians must appreciate that they get the (necessary) austerity while Miley gets the military spending
reply
It's terrible to see that the Argentinians are now being screwed like this too.

Finally, Millei is showing who supported him to be the captain of a sinking ship! The ship is still drowning but the captain is adamant to believe on those who promised to save it all.
NATO is a war machine propoganda and playing around to promote corporates that manufacture safety by killing equipments. Shame on current world!
reply
Even here there are a lot of people who fell for the nato propaganda. Please watch what Pres. Eisenhower once said about the power behind politics:
reply
Argentina can't send aid to anyone, the coffers are bare
reply
They'll be bying F-16,.surprise surprise, by whom?? And will send them to the ukrainian money launderers.
reply
No new members!
Country club is over capacity
reply
Ah, there is a lot of free seats if You want to apply for new USD credit lines
reply
Why is this surprising? NATO's enemies are clearly the bad guys, and it makes sense for Argentina to be apart of a defensive alliance. The possibility of Argentina getting invaded by someone like China or maybe even Russia is certainly not zero.
If you want to live in peace, you have to have the ability to defend yourself. Doing that as part of an alliance is much cheaper.
reply
NATO are not the good guys, geopolitics don't work that way
reply
Being a NATO member could increase the odds of a worldwide conflict spreading to South America.
If Argentina’s goal is to preserve peace, it would try to maintain neutral geopolitical posture and good trade relations with Russia or China and acquire BTC for its reserves as a geopolitical leveraging tool.
reply
Russia is quite happy to attack neutral, weak, countries and take their stuff. Ukraine being a perfect example.
That are simply thugs who are happy to steal what they can. The way to defend yourself against such thugs is to align with strong nations who are against thuggery. NATO is exactly that.
Remind me, when was the last time a country in NATO got invaded?
reply
Good point
reply
Not even New Zealand or Australia are part of NATO. It's not going to happen to any country outside of Europe besides US & Canada.
reply
Could we have capitalized any better from USA monetary excess? Leaping on the wave of historic USD emission out of the national banking nightmare and straight into monetary freedom. Isn't Milei a genius?

Argentina would be SATO, based on location, am I right? Not North Atlantic at all. Plus the northern hemisphere has stifled and stopped technology transfer to the south since the end of the Cold War.
I personally heard this in a direct statement from a rep at the United Nations in Vienna back in 1991.
reply
I'm skeptical because the sources are circular. Where is the Argentina news declaration of this?
If Argentina wants to get involved it is due to the money grab, territory grab and resources. Also, Argentina has a very large population that is sympathetic to those who fought for the Nazi which definitely includes Ukraine nationalists.

apparently came from the minister of defense himself around april Luis Petri.. They aim to be global partners.. not full members
reply
Where is the source? That was my question. There should be a declaration on a government website in Spanish. Seeing Ukraine language on a polish website about Argentina joining NATO (or desiring to) is about as convoluted as you can get.

That's not a source, that's the AP which the first link leads to nowhere and it is a gas-lit paragraph:
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentina formally requested on Thursday to join NATO as a global partner, a status that would clear the way for greater political and security cooperation at a time when the right-wing government of President Javier Milei aims to boost ties with Western powers and attract investment.
There is no source from the government, just a statement from the AP which is a questionable organization that used to be a "legitimate source". Yet there is no, source for the article.
Geoana said he welcomed Argentina’s bid to become an accredited partner in the alliance — a valued role short of “ally” for nations that are not in NATO’s geographical area and not required to take part in collective military actions. NATO membership is currently limited to countries of Europe, Turkey, Canada and the United States.
Where does this come from? What source?
