The nostr protocol directly solves two problems in internet applications: identity portability and data portability. Products built on nostr can depend on those two problems being solved. For most other equally challenging problems, the nostr protoco […]

One thing I've noticed: almost all nostr profiles have a display name, a picture, and a bio, and almost all of them seem to be stored exclusively on relay.damus.io. I've connected to the top 5 relays on nostr.watch, queried for metadata for random ac […]

Another "interesting" thing to note: where are Coinbase's, Gemini's and Binance's LN implementations?

Hopefully some way for the SN community to participate in the next round of funding.
reply
That's sort of what territories are.
reply
In a way. It allows you to invest in and partake in the potential growth of SN but say Elon finds SN and likes some feature of SN. He could have his team reverse engineer and copy it or he could offer k00b 10M to just buy SN. If k00b accepts SN and its investors do well but territory owners have nothing.
That being said if I was an investor in SN I might not enjoy myself as much on the site.
reply
That's a really good point. It would be nice if there were a more formal agreement with territory owners that treated you as something closer to site partners or shareholders.
I'm thinking about the possibility of buying ~econ and as much as I trust @k00b, the ability to just get completely rugged bothers me.
reply
Maybe when we have some bandwidth I can look at territory founders really owning sn in a literal sense.
Out of curiosity though, what kind of rug pulls concern you? I could guess, but I probably don’t think about it the same way.
reply
Personally, I look at territories as sort of a franchise. It's not really a brand license because we operate within the SN ecosystem.
Eventually I would like to see some sort of franchise agreement (can be very basic) between SN and territories. What are territories rights, what are SN rights, do territories have any protections from others starting competing territories. I am not against competing territories but if SN were to become very popular and territories were profitable it is likely people will try to create competing territories for the most profitable ones.
Also I think SN needs a cohesive marketing plan that territories can tap into. I think territories can help with the SN brand as well. I am somewhat troubled that although SN has clearly grown over the past 3 years, it hasn't captured a lot of the low hanging fruit (bitcoiners that are active on X, nostr, reddit). Sometimes it feels like pulling teeth to try to get people to give SN a try and I don't know why that is. Maybe inertia (people stick with platforms they are on even if they dislike them) and maybe a bit of exhaustion with all the "bitcoin things" one needs to keep up with these days.
Marketing SN is a tough proposition because the easiest path is to promote it as a way to stack sats but we are already seeing too many people that are optimizing for sats. So, need to balance user growth and quality of community. The harder path is "a better community".
The long term viability of SN and all its territories will be dependent on the ability to grow the user base while maintaining a great community.

I predict that this comment will appear in 2025's This Day in Stacker News.
Hopefully, we look back on it with appreciation for how much positive change has happened since.
reply
Hope not. Hopefully someone will see it and respond with an awesome action plan as to how SN can grow users by 100x and still preserve the integrity of the community. For those smarter than I to figure out.
Future stackers aren't on X for the most part. They're on reddit, hacker news, and less wrong. They're people that want to be pseudonymous, honest, helpful, and vulnerable - forum folk, plebs not celebs. X tbh is nearly the antithesis of that.
At least, that's my hypothesis and to test it we need to hire the right person to recruit from there.
reply
Mostly agree but anecdotal counterpoint. I found SN from twitter (X) and once I tried it, realized it was such a better community, experience that I was hooked. Not saying all bitcoiners on X are looking for that, many who were migrated to nostr.
Years ago I did a ceiling tile replacement for a car dealership. When I was working on the ceiling and looking down I noticed the lights were not reflecting off the porcelain floor tiles. I told the GM your porcelain tiles need to be resurfaced and he said "No we just did that a couple years ago. They said it should last 10 years" and I replied "they didn't do a very good job" and offered him a demo. The following week I brought in some equipment and resurfaced and refinished a few tiles and showed him the difference. He was shocked.
Point being sometimes people don't realize they have gotten a shit service or are using a shit product until they try something else.
I fully agree!
reply
To be clear, it's the existence of the technical possibility that bothers me, not any expectation that it would happen.
Basically, if I buy a territory outright and you shut down the site, for whatever reason, I'm just screwed. If you sell the site to an organization I don't want to be part of, there's no buy-out for me. Stuff like that.
reply
Great seed round! I didn't know that. Congratulations k00b! Happy days 🀠
reply
What do we call our 'stacking since' days on SN? Mine is tomorrow.
Or maybe that's too close to a Reddit 'cake day' for people.
reply
It should probably be based on halvings for SN: "You've been stacking on Stacker News for one cycle!"
reply
Hive mind is an interesting name for a company
reply
It gets its name from chapter 2 of Kevin Kelly's Out of Control.
reply
Come on! @k00b is all over in these time-travelling posts upto now!!!
reply
It's good to taste all these goldies oldies! This just makes me more and more inclined to SN!
