A recent survey by the Ifo Institute and the Swiss Institute for Economic Policy reveals growing skepticism about the EU's future as an economic and political powerhouse. Experts across Europe, particularly in France, Germany, and the Czech Republic, foresee a decline in the EU's significance.

The "Economic Expert Survey" found that many believe the EU must bolster its unified foreign and economic policies to compete with the US and China. Despite this, a majority of respondents advocate for increased legislative powers at the EU level. However, they also predict a rise in the importance of national policymaking, possibly due to the surge of populist parties in Europe.

Conducted from June 12 to June 26, 2024, the survey included nearly 1,600 economic experts. The results were compiled before a coalition formed in the European Parliament and the appointment of the new European Commission President.
