@btcgandalf asked this on X and I don't have a good answer. I love cars as machines but I don't have aspirations around them beyond their utility. Still, I respect the aspiration and enjoy watching Jay Leno's garage.

Forced to answer though, I want a maximally safe, minimal, all-purpose, off-road capable, mini utility van. I haven't done any research around them because I don't need another desire, but I suspect I could find something like that out there if I spent enough time looking. Aesthetically, I'd prefer it look like a VW bus, but those are extremely unsafe.

I had Mercedes and BMWs in the past. They are really nice, fun to drive and make you feel important for a week or at least like you are keeping up with the Joneses (especially in business) but cars are such a waste of money. Mostly my wife would drive them anyways because I always either needed to or preferred to drive my work van. I would really only take the car occasionally when I had meetings or if I was visiting customers. A few months before I sold my business, we were having problems with the transmission on our BMW X3 and I didn't want to pay thousands to fix it so I sold it as is to a mechanic I know and we bought a used Nissan Rogue which we have been using ever since. It was my wife's idea to buy the Rogue instead of another "luxury" brand.

If I had no concern for setting money ablaze on a car and regretting not directing that fiat to bitcoin I would probably buy a Porsche Cayenne. Has to be an SUV because my dream is not to drive around by myself in some super car but to drive in style with my family.

I spec'd out a RR Cullinan for fun a few weeks ago. I'm a very binary person. If I'm going luxury, I want to go all the way.

The first van we had for our business was such a piece of junk but for some reason I still liked it. It was so useful for transporting stuff. We eventually bought newer, nicer ones with the company decals on the side and all the bells and whistles but I have so many fond and not so fond memories of grinding in that first piece of junk, rusted van.

Rolls? SN must be working on another funding round. Haha

Vans are true all purpose vehicles. We have a Toyota minivan I bought used a few years ago. All the seats come out and with seats we can haul two families in it. I've hauled full 8'x4' lumber in it, we've moved homes using it exclusively. We mostly use its cabin for storage now though lol.

Those are THE BEST. Actually the model 3 is the best.. These new arent so offroad as the T3, the brick.. From all cars i had, my van is the one i miss..

I've owned several different cars. Here is my take:

Honda Civic - Cheap and Reliable.
Toyota Camry - Maybe best bang for buck for used car. Very Reliable
Ford Mustang - Fun and classic. Very fast in a straight line....less so around curves
BMW 550/535/335 - Maybe the perfect "driving machine". Excellent cars. Expensive and needlessly over engineered. Whatever your repair guesstimate is, triple it.
Porsche 911 - The "supercar for the everyman". Very fun car to drive. Almost impossible to not speed in it. The most impressive thing is the brakes.... Very impractical car though....its only real use is driving max 2 people around in.
Cadillac STS - would rank this something like a BMW thats less fun to drive but more comfy for road trips....maybe that makes it sort like a Mercedes?
Honda Odyssey - What married man with kids doesn't want to drive a slow uncomfortable box around? The magic of all minivans lies in sliding doors....its their killer feature.
Ford Expedition - Good SUV. Drove like it was smaller than it was....was less difficult to navigate tight spots then you may originally imagine. However like all SUVs after a few years became a creaky rattlebox.
Chevy Colorado - Good decent small size pickup. Sort of miss it, but not much
Isuzu Pickup S - My fav tiny pickup. Can't say why I liked it so....just felt like driving a honda civic that was a pickup. Reliable and basically could run forever.
Ford Victoria - Not a bad car at all. Underrated honestly. Workhorse and cheap to fix. Land barge and not fun to drive, but good for long distances.
Ford Taurus - Decent car. Sort of forgettable.
Saturn - Rattletrap + Forgettable.
Mercury Mariner - Small SUV. Forgettable.

Basically every car I had!

But note: 3 of the above were company cars, and 2 were hand-me-downs that my parents gave to me because they didn't need (and then I handed down to other family members), and 1 (Ford Mustang) was a gift from my dad, and 1 was my wifes car that she owned before we were married (Saturn).

EDIT: By the way, my current car is the 20 year old Honda Civic! Keep stackin....

I'm into the look of new cars, but I'm not really a car person. I've got a beater from 2001 that does the trick. Cars are just a money pit, you know? I'd rather save up for other stuff and live a little more comfortably.

Those are beautiful. Recent ones arent as dangerous as the old models. The old ones with rear engine where worst.. Mercedes V/Class is good, the new Transporters (eurovans) are also good. Not sure if you can find those in US though..

From all the cars i had, the vw van was my favorite..

Me too. Shame they dont build this anymore. That one was from 1984 or 85... beds for 4, small kitchen.. But the best was the mechanics.. 2 diff locks and a central decoupler.. Syncro - The van that would break where others wont reach

It's my favorite overall vehicle. Compact enough that it is easy to drive. Goes anywhere. Comfortable enough. Lots of parts available. Very reliable. Great vehicle for most applications. Way better gas mileage than my land cruiser. That one stays on the property mostly. It's my work truck. The 4runner goes everywhere including long road trips.

Oh man, you have so many options!! Depending oon your budget, you should go with the ford, dodge or mercedes van. That way you could camp inside your van if you arent outdoors type of person! I also like Jay Leno, which is your favorite episode? I liked his Ford Galaxie one, it has a lot of his personal history. Fun to watch.

I think Toyota and Honda have the most reliable engines. They are also very good value for money. Royce, Bugati, Mercedes, Audi, BMW or other expensive cars are for show off only, at least here in India.
