There's a lot of mud in this water.
I heard an interesting story from one of those former USSS podcasters that made a lot of sense of the disparate facts I've encountered.
Basically, the shooter didn't know he could get up on the roof when he showed up. He started setting up on the ground where he could fire into the crowd, but noticed the cops approaching him and ducked behind that building to evade them. From there he noticed that he could use an AC system to climb onto the roof, which he did to evade the cops. Once he was up there, he realized he had a line of sight on Trump. The reason no one was on the roof then was that they didn't register that AC system as a way onto the roof.
Maybe some more details will come out that blow that story up, but it squared a lot of circles for me.
I heard that theory. It leaves the ladder purchase unexplained.

They're now saying that there was no ladder at the scene and none of the footage of him wandering around has a ladder.
No ladder clears up how implausible it seemed that someone with a backpack, ladder, and range finder would just be allowed to wander around.

I don't think he had a particular plan.
I think he showed up prepared for several contingencies. That explains why he had a car full of explosives as well as a backpack full of body armor and hundreds of rounds, but then he ended up just taking a few shots on Trump.

No, but the set of explanations changes if he wasn't solely planning on shooting from that roof.

Not that I've seen.
They have footage of him wandering around?
reply
Yeah, from like an hour before the shooting.

That is very suspicious....
Walking around a building and looking up?
reply
Not specifically looking up at the building, just wandering around sort of aimlessly. You probably have to watch some of the coverage to understand why it looks so suspicious.

It is weird. He had been flagged as suspicious 3 hours prior to the shooting and flagged as a threat an hour before.
I thought the ladder was already attached to the roof. Part of the structure. So he didn’t turn up with it at all from what I understood?
reply
I had heard that, but I haven't seen any confirmation that there is such a ladder. That should be easy enough for them to confirm or deny.

I don’t know. He didn’t release any of the stuff he said he would in his first term, so maybe not.
There is a lot that could be immediately cleared up by releasing information that they definitely have.

It would be better for public trust, but whoever’s at fault is going to try desperately to cover it up.
