I fear the common sense is to think the inverse, where groups feel strong together are more likely to be (internally) supported for the madness they behave.
Individuals in the other side, have less opportunity to validate ideas and usually defined as mad by surrounding groups, that instead of embracing differences discriminate when ideologies do not coincide with their madness!
