Facebook has been making significant open source contributions to the web for years. It's weird to see them only now being considered open source citizens. I wish it all weren't funded by surveillance capitalism and what we know are emotionally destructive algos, but at least we're getting some return on our "investment" (for however long this AI posture lasts).
The recent bloomberg fluff piece on Zuck is pretty fun if you haven't seen it:

I am very curious to know how Artificial Intelligence is going to improve Meta and how that is going to improve the world.

Third, a key difference between Meta and closed model providers is that selling access to AI models isn’t our business model. That means openly releasing Llama doesn’t undercut our revenue, sustainability, or ability to invest in research like it does for closed providers. (This is one reason several closed providers consistently lobby governments against open source.)
