In 2024, the median salary for the typical American home buyer has risen to $104,339—up from $88,000 just two years prior.Despite record-high home prices, housing demand continues to outpace supply, even with mortgage rates at their highest in over a decade. As one bright spot, housing inventory is steadily increasing, with the number of homes for sale up almost 19% in May compared to the previous year. This growth in inventory could help ease the cost of home ownership looking ahead. This graphic shows the salary needed to buy a home across the 50 largest U.S. metropolitans in 2024, based on data from Home Sweet Home.

You can buy a Villa in the greenish suburbs of any good Indian city in 1 fourth of the amount of the median for USA. For the half of my life I've thought of shifting to US but looking at these prices, it now seems much better in india.

Interesting, but a very misleading title. These are median home prices, which literally means 50% of homes are cheaper than those prices. They should have reported something like the 5th percentile of home prices.

Good observations as always. Using the percentile seems more correct to me too. As I've always said, we need to be careful when reading the data because of what you mention.

Renting has its ups and downs. The biggest plus is that you can pack up and leave whenever you feel like it. The downside is that all that rent money could be going towards a house. Personally, I like not having a mortgage hanging over my head. It's great knowing I can pick up and move whenever I want.

I don't earn a salary but my earnings otherwise are $150-$200. In this income I can buy a 0.002 Bitcoin every month. That's what I want to buy only.

Lol! In this much money, we can even build a high school building including the cost of 2 acres of land here in India.

Sooo expensive! Thanks for telling. I always wondered if US were really expensive when I listened from my friends about it living there.
