Howdy folks! I'm @lylepratt, Founder and CEO of Vida. Vida is the easiest way to monetize an audience or protect the value of your own time. Vida gives you a free link page (link-in-bio page) that makes it super easy for anyone to pay to engage with you via calls, messages, or live streams. You can even optionally connect your account to your own Lightning node via LNBits, or to your Strike account, and we've got tons more Lightning integrations coming soon.
Here's my personal page: https://vida.page/lylepratt.
Since we've just recently rolled out "V2" of Vida, I'm here to to answer any questions you have about it, or me. Go!
Currently it seems like a 'demand for inbox space' model
  • What is the incentive for the influencer to respond?
  • Will there be a way for users to tell how active/responsive an influencer is?
  • What made you choose a more private dm model instead of a public square model? Technical constraints?
reply
For messaging, one thing we're doing in the short term is we will show you the creator's response rate, so you easily see if they usually actively respond.
A benefit of calling is that you only pay if they answer, so there's no risk of paying for a "no response".
reply
Hi, how come you don't have to KYC your customers? Sounds super cool. How come more people are not doing it?
reply
The unfortunate fact is that we will have to KYC and impose certain limits on users that use our service custodially (who don't connect their account to their own node or to some other custodian like Strike). I wish I could do it differently, but it's something we're forced to work on.
reply
What features would you like to see LN node services add to make it so that every user can easily take control of their own funds?
reply
We need a standard set of APIs that get bundled with each and every node that lets a user authorize an external service (like Vida) to spend (and receive) directly from the node with user defined limits. Currently its still way too difficult to do this and beyond the reach of most users.
reply
have users earned more money via calls, messages, or livestreams on Vida?
reply
by far and away, messages has been much more popular on Vida so far. Part of the reason for this is just because messaging is preferred by most people today, but it's also because of product deficiencies we're working to solve like no ability to limit the time frame that you're open for calls.
reply
makes sense, scheduling calls would be a game changer.
reply
agree with this. would love to see a feature where users can list their availability for a call, you can pay some amount to book the call, and then stream per minute when you're on the call.
Intro.co is doing something similar.
reply
this is definitely in the works!

What got you into doing startups, and your telecom startup BetterVoice in the first place?
reply
I've always had a mind for entrepreneurship and come from a long line of entrepreneurs. One of my first start-ups back in my college days was a website called VGPro (video game pro) that let users upload/download mods for games. Users could put their own Adsense ads on their mod pages to earn money, and we facilitated the bandwidth and infrastructure needed to get their creations in the hands of gamers all over the world (this wasn't so easy back in the day before "the cloud"!). We had over 1M unique users per month before selling it. I created it with a good friend that actually recently also joined Vida as Chief of Product Noah Hayes (Noah is a big reason why the V2 of Vida is so much more awesome).
My last start-up which you mentioned was one of the first online-only business phone system platforms. I didn't have any telecom experience before but dove in, made a ton of mistakes, learned a lot, ultimately grew the business, and sold it to the largest wholesale telecom operator in the world by traffic volumes: Inteliquent. I worked for them for the past 5 years before leaving to start Vida.

I see a lot of the same monetization incentive schemes in that website as what you are doing with vida. Very neat.
reply
building a network is all about aligning incentives!

Thanks for taking time for an AMA - your product looks great. I'm curious as to what has been most successful so far in your marketing efforts? It looks like you may have challenges of both building a marketplace - and attracting people to offer their time via a call/message on Vida - while also building the distribution to attract "regular" users?
reply
Ahh, the classic "chicken or the egg" 2-sided market place problem! This problem is why the product is currently focused on helping Creators monetize their existing audiences. Creators have a need for new tools to monetize their existing audiences, Users have a desire to have access to Creators and Influencers they respect, and Vida provides the tools to facilitate this (while also growing our network). Today we do this via our Link Page and Twitter Bots, but soon also with plugins to let users Pay to Post messages on Twitch/Youtube live streams, and many other similar features.
reply
Thanks, this makes a lot of sense. What kind of marketing/outreach/etc efforts have been most successful so far at getting these tools and plugins Vida offers in front of the creators and users?
reply
We've been fortunate to have many creators that are also Bitcoiners reach out to us, but we've also been successful in reaching out to existing users of products like LinkTree. When we talk to these people, we always focus on our Vida Partners program, which aligns the incentives such that, as they use Vida, they also help grow the network, and in return earn residual ongoing bitcoin. Vida Partners incentivizes each creator to bring on their creator friends, who then bring on their own audiences, who then grow the network even more.
reply
Very cool, thanks for all of your insight. I hope everything continues to go well!
reply
What's the most surprising thing you learned building and marketing Vida?
reply
that Iโ€™m not crazy and people actually want to use it ๐Ÿ˜‚

What's up Lyle. Bummed I missed the ABC with you and the V4V gang.
When are you going to swing through PlebLab_ for a tour, a work day, and a formal introduction.
Look forward to meeting dude. Love what you're working on!
reply
Howdy Kyle! Iโ€™m hoping to swing by soon! Maybe later this week while BitBlockBoom is going on? Iโ€™ll be there ๐Ÿป

I believe that what you are doing is Amazing and is going to be the next thing ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ
I have three questions:
  1. How do you think this will be of benefit for all Twitter users ?
  2. Are there going to be paid memberships down the road that would enhance development of the platform by using users feedback ?
  3. Are there any plans to roll out affiliate opportunities or any perks for referrals and how do referrals are accomplished ?
Thank you Lyle ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ
reply
  1. I hope Vida will be a benefit to any online user, including all Twitter users.
  2. Vida will always be free to use and will monetize itself based on value flowing through the network
  3. Yes, we have rolled out a brand new Vida Partners program that pays people Bitcoin to help us grow the network: Vida Partners
reply
Lyle, it was a pleasure working with you on Thank God for Bitcoin. I was curious, how do you determine when something is done? For me, your feedback on our last chapter was inspired and I always wondered how you figured out that we needed to redo it.
reply
How does calling work? Wouldn't it be better for people to pay to schedule a meeting instead of arbitrarily calling anytime?
reply
What's something you believe that few bitcoiners agree with you on?
reply
The battle isn't won...It's going to be bloody...but we can speed up the timeline by building products and services that actively show people the benefits of using Bitcoin as money. Show, don't tell. Do, don't talk. We've got way too much talking and telling in Bitcoin circles, and not nearly enough showing and doing.
reply
I think most Bitcoiners would agree with you on the thinkboi/builder ratio being a little high
reply
Do you think in use Nostr protocol on Vida?
reply
I havenโ€™t spent a lot of time with Nostr, but Iโ€™m a fan. I think thereโ€™s potential integrations as we open up our API and spec for SIP 402.
reply
Amazing new product, everyone of us loves to talk or message our favorite creator/celebrity, but they sadly 90% of the times don't answer you. Vida is a way so that you can easily chat with these creators.
What do you think about that Vida will be a nice stepping stone for creators not into bitcoin or lightning to easily enter this amazing world?
Thank you for this amazing AMA!
reply
My goal for Vida is to give 1 Billion people their first Bitcoin via Vida Partners. Its pretty lofty, and honestly crazy, but introducing people to the benefits of Bitcoin, Lightning, and real-time settlement is a core purpose of Vida. So, I'm in total alignment with you here!
reply
the core purpose of vida is very noble, i wish you the best of luck my friend

Here we got @lylepratt coming from Vida Easy to pay, fast as a cheetah You might be Lyle, she might be Rita If you like falafel, put them in a pita
reply
What's are the biggest challenges Vida faces in the
  1. short term
  2. long term
reply
Short term: acquiring a beachhead of creators that will seed the network with their audiences. Long term: keep incentives aligned toward continued network growth
Both of these are basically: acquire users. This is why I think its so important to build an army of word-of-mouth partners that help me grow the network via Vida Partners
reply
Hey Lyle!
If a user wants to use VIDA but owns no Bitcoin or hasn't used LN, what's your preferred path to onboard them?
reply
We're working on multiple integrations that will allow users to withdraw to Fiat (similar to how our Strike integration works today) and we're also working on rolling out support to add "Vida Credit" funds to your account with dirty fiat (Apple+Google pay.) This will come with the unfortunate side affect of having to hold funds sourced from credit as well as other things, but it will open the product up to a much wider audience and still flow into Bitcoin eventually after holds, etc.
Ultimately we want this experience to show exactly why Bitcoin is better, and we hope each creator on our platform will ask their audiences to load up their accounts with Bitcoin to reap the benefits of instant settlement.

What were the biggest takeaways from your prior startup?
reply
After my last start-up I swore to myself that my next one would be targeted at a massive global market that I had plenty of room to compete and iterate in. A business needs plenty of room to carve out a niche and expand in. Finding customers is hard enough for any business, but a big market makes things easier.
reply
Do you have a set of tools to make onboarding easier to potential new users ?
Any marketing links or videos that current users can share to accelerate adoption of this platform ?
I love making podcasts. On my latest episode: https://fountain.fm/episode/9708717320 I invited people to come to your AMA this morning because I believe this is going to be the new thing !!!
If there Is ever an opportunity I can be of service on your endevour just let me know ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

More onboard materials are in the works and I hope the community helps us create more of them through Vida Partners!
