I wanted to start a conversation on the various solo mining pools. Right now I am using public pool's publically available service to mine with a few terahash. But, I also see that public pool has never found a block. I know it has only existed for a short time, and only in the hyper high difficulty era we are in. But, Is anyone aware of how Public Pool's mining setup compares to say, Solo CK Pool which seems to be the undisputed king of solo mining? Seems like if Solo CK has a setup that maxmimizes the chances that your rare finding of a block is not orphaned due to latency...that the 2% fee is well worth it. What are the aspects to consider in one's opinion that make a good solo mining pool (or perhaps that apply to all pools)? Any other solo mining pools that seem successful, worth noting ? I know public-pool can be self-hosted and there is also the new futurebit miner that can solo mine without a pool. Curious to hear the community's thoughts, experiences :)

Currently on Public Pool with the intention of running my own instance of Public Pool once my node is up and running.
That Public Pool has never found a block should not mean anything, CK Pool is a lot older.

Honestly just run your own solo ck pool. It is straightforward. Just test your setup on testnet for a few days and if you mine a block or two you should be good to go.
Its a great learning experience, and you get to own the whole stack.
Also you get to set your own bitsig.

Would be great if more people can test out our solo mining node build "Stratum V2 in a Box" by Urban Hacker, Demand pool, and myself. https://urbanhacker.net/stratum-v2-in-a-box-the-easy-way/
if you don't want to use the script we have a the hacker's way version.

Love these discussions - we need more decentralization in mining! :)
Hopefully we see dozens of these pools take up 5-10% of the network over the next decade!

I really also want to know .. tbh I just use them because of ease of use and because it comes pre-set on the bitaxes.
I mean, with the current (and uh, wait a few more hours, 10%+ up!) it's not likely that this is ever going to be a concern ;-)

ya i imagine there is no way to know if any blocks were found by public pool but orphaned due to not propogating the answer quick enough, time can only hint at the answer as in 'one should have been found by now'...but even then not really 😅
