Well, it was a good day for unexpected surprises (women's fencing, men's rowing), as well as areas the US has done well in (women's gymnastics, swimming). Sometimes it's a matter of what events take place when.
I've never understood why the only medal table options are gold or total medals. I'd love to see a combined version where gold is worth, say, five points, silver three, bronze 1. Still gives weight to gold, but also gives props to countries that score multiple medals in events.
