The idea for permanently editable posts pops up every so often. Here's @elvismercury's post about it. (Gosh, it sure would be nice if he came back, wouldn't it?) I was thinking about a variant of that idea today.
Could we use wiki-style posts? I'm thinking about some of the territories, like ~bitcoin_beginners, that want to have evergreen resource posts. It would be nice to be able to have our "official" post for certain topics that can be updated by stackers and plebs other than the OP.
I'm not sure exactly what the price and equity mechanisms should be, but it seems like there's something here. It would obviously cost sats to make edits and I'm thinking it should cost more sats the more substantial your edits are. Then your revenue share on the post would be something like the share of sats you've put into the post (posting fee + all edit fees).
This would probably need to come after making rewards more compatible with zapping evergreen content.

If he comes back, I’d bet it’s after the election and its fallout.
reply
Any particular reason for that prediction?

I recall him saying something about how political SN would get during the election.
reply
I don't feel like it's overwhelming, but some people seem very sensitive to it whereas I actually find it interesting.
reply
I generally avoid other social media platforms due to politics, among other topics. I look forward to the end of the election cycle.
reply
Do you feel like it's crowding out other discussions or is it just annoying having it around?
reply
Mostly the latter. Sometimes it seems like too many topics turn political in the discussion, but that happens IRL too, with certain people anyway. People must like it though, since it still happens and gets zapped here on SN. It's just not for me. I prefer the bitcoin/technology-centric discussions the most.
reply
I usually dip out of discussions when that happens, too.
Some opinions are interesting, but there are some people who only want their opinion to be heard. Quite radical, if I say so myself.
reply
there are some people who only want their opinion to be heard
I'd say that's pretty common, regardless of topic. Most people prefer talking to listening.
reply
True. But it is nice to hear everyones opinion and gauge the atmosphere.
reply
I do feel it has gotten more political heavy after the trump shooting.
reply
I remember when he was posting during the march madness. Seems like ages ago.
reply
I know it hasn't actually been that long, but I always looked forward to his thoughts.
reply
He always made some well thought out and interesting posts. Sometimes he explained his thoughts so well there wasnt much to discuss haha
reply
Ha! Good point
reply
Right? Sometimes I would rack my head over what to say, because his posts were so good!
reply
C'mon @elvismercury, succumb to the flattery and show yourself.

I know he has a territory that he manages. So he does come one every once in a while.
reply
Unless he paid for it in full or yearly. He hasn't commented on anything that I've seen.

The day @elvismercury returns shall become a SN holiday
I think there should be a a territory 'Stacker_wiki' and it should be allowed unlimited edits.
reply
I don’t mind the idea but I think the use case is pretty limited.
I think to something like the NFL pool rules post. I guess it would be great if it was possible to edit, add, change the content in the post as needed to update rules but it’s also just as easy to copy/paste it into a new post and edit what’s needed.
reply
You're just talking about permanent edits, though. I'm not sure if there would be more or less utility in the wiki post type.
I can imagine lots of topics where it might be interesting to open the post to the community for editing. One that came to mind was our attempting to piece together the Trump assassination attempt information. ~conspiracies could pin a wiki where we can add elements to the timeline as new information comes out.
reply
This sounds like an excellent idea, particularly in relation to what I've talked about in the bitcoin beginners territory. I really like your idea of variable fees for edits and revenue sharing, although it seems like it would be incredibly difficult to determine the appropriate structure. Obviously the utility would vary from territory to territory, but I think the site as a whole would benefit. I think @ek had some good ideas, but it seems so long ago now that I can't remember the details. It was one more thing that took a back seat to the wallet madness.
reply
Hopefully, @ek remembered his ideas.
I'm starting to think more about what else SN can be and do. It's amazing at being a reddit style forum, but I think there's a lot of potential to layer more into it.

I only remember discussing edit history with @siggy47
reply
Would the post be considered new anytime it got edited?
reply
I'm not sure about "new". I like the idea of it going to the top of recent after being edited, though.
Something I've talked to k00b about a bit is how to reset the early zapping clock, so that there's always an incentive (other than human decency) to zap posts that you like.
reply
Yeah that’s kind of what I was getting at with “new”. Does it get more weighting in the rewards algo and how is that balanced if it is a post as you describe like the Trump assassination attempt that is getting edited repeatedly to add new info.
reply
The idea I pitched k00b for this is that after a post drops out of top status, the next person who zaps it resets the early clock. If it doesn't make it back to top status that day, then it would start over with the next person to zap it.
A post like the Trump assassination attempt would probably remain a top post for a few days and then each big revelation might get it back into top status.
reply
I like the clock restart idea.

We have an issue open for perpetual edits. It’s definitely something we want to do.
reply
I recall people proposing escalating fees for making edits. Are you planning on having anything like that?
reply
23 sats \ 0 replies \ @k00b 4 Aug
We’ve thought about it. My bias would be to ship it without fees and see if the edit history deters abuse well enough
reply
I’m all for it. We can collaborate together on human interests topics too. Stuff like how to form sticky habits or improve one’s writing. SN’s strength is allowing a diverse range of perspectives to congregate, so anything that facilitates that is good

Great use cases!

you can have evergreen resource posts in the bio, it's made for it!
reply
That's true, but only I can edit my bio. The point of a wiki is that the whole community can edit it.
reply

right, that's a bit more complicated to manage I assume... from a tech perspective too! Anyhow, can be a good feature for territory owner
reply
I looked at it a while ago. I like the idea and I'm not expecting SN to be the one-stop site for every single thing, but I do see some use cases for these kinds of posts.
reply
stackers have outlawed this. turn on wild west mode in your /settings to see outlawed content.
