I have the Start9 ready to go. We're in the same boat. But, I have been using NixOS for a while on my desktop, and though it's weird at first, I actually seem to screw things up on it less. So, once some real life business I'm attending to quiets down I'm thinking about really kicking away the training wheels and downloading bitcoin core, and setting up a btc/ln node that's not plug and play. I may fail, so I still have Umbrel/Start9 to fall back on. I like trying stuff that's way over my head. If the frustration level gets too high, I'll just quit.
I bet you could have been a dev in another life. At least you don't have the fear most people have.

No. I feel like you need to be methodical. I'm too scatterbrained. I also have a terrible memory. I really do it only for the dopamine hit. It's an incredible feeling when you try something, and it keeps failing, and you keep thinking about what you're doing wrong, and then it finally works, it's an incredible rush, at least for me.

I mean... that sounds like a dev to me lol. I'm guessing people assume a lot about devs like people assume a lot about lawyers. :)
I'm always impressed with "non-technical" people that get technical.
