First day at our house
Yesterday I made an 8 hour round trip to pick up our new dog. You may rightly be wondering why I would drive all that way to adopt a dog? There must be local shelters, right?
Well, there's a story behind it. In the early 2000s I became interested in a dog breed that is now called the American Bulldog. It's basically a farm dog bred in the south of the United States. No one is 100 percent sure what different breeds make up an American Bulldog. Two breeds that definitely seem in the mix are pitbull and mastiff. If you're interested in the history, it is fascinating if you enjoy that kind of stuff. Anyway, I got interested in Schutzhund training back then, and got a "hybrid" type dog from a well known breeder in California. She was the best dog I ever owned. I did Schutzhund with her for two years, but we never competed or did a trial. It was mostly my fault, not hers. It didn't matter. She turned into the sweetest, smartest, most loving family dog- affectionate, mentally stable, and fully capable of scaring the crap out of anyone she felt was a threat to her family. Unfortunately, she developed bone cancer at the age of 9. They gave her six months to live after amputating a leg. She made it another happy, healthy four years.
A few months back I heard about a breeder who has similar blood lines to our old dog. He is an old time breeder who actually still knows one of the two original founding breeders. We had a family meeting, and decided to get a puppy. We reserved one from an upcoming litter. Sadly, all the puppies were stillborn. The breeder knew we had a similar dog in the past. He told us about a nice 1 year old female that had been living in his kennel for a year that he was looking to place. He said he would happily give her to me for free if I came to pick her up. She was supposed to be used for a breeding, but the breeder who had the mother had disappeared, and never sent the genealogy papers. Without the papers, working bulldog owners wouldn't take a chance on puppies without a pedigree. These dogs are mainly used for hog catching and weight pulling.
I didn't care about the pedigree, and I intend to have her spayed anyway. He sent us a few photos. He warned us she hadn't been socialized with humans, but she seemed incredibly good natured. During the introduction he warned me that she might be stand offish and to be alert. She practically jumped into my arms, licking me everywhere. I was immediately hooked.
Getting her into the truck was a process. She had never worn a collar or leash before. Once we got her in the crate, it was a smooth ride home.
So far, so good. I know the training process will be a little tougher with an unsocialized one year old dog, but I really enjoy the process. I might be on Stacker News a little less! (Nah. I doubt it)
Name him Rocko or grampa I would
On a scale of 1-10 rate her cuteness

The dog is very cute, I like to look at it, the color is also unique, this dog must be very agile.
Beautiful and adorable! Mine is the pure black labra female.

I love Black labs. Beautiful!
Quite beautiful, she looks energetic as well. What's her name?
Wow! It's adorable.
You might already know we also have female GSD. We didn't get her spayed though. I wanted it but my brother @Coinsreporter didn't agree and said that it would be a cruelty upon her. Now, we get cute little puppies (last time she had 9) every 8 or 9 months. For mating, we have a male GSD in the house next door.
Good one! As far as I can remember, it was you who brought a female dog while I told you not to bring one. Also, it was a collective decision not to get her spayed. Now only blaming me!
Congratulations for new puppy! Have you finalized her name?
We're still looking for one that fits. Any suggestions?
Fiddo / maxy / Bruno
She's a female! Those are boy's names, I think. Am I being too cis?
Ohh, Lora / Lucy /Cherry /Daisy
Why not something that harkens back to her southern roots:
Annabelle (maybe belle for short?) Dixie Blanche (shes also white) Bessie
Nice mix, looking good. You know we have SN on the phones these days, so you can catch SN even on a long walk :-) Good mixes are the best of both worlds, here is Rotti and Coonhound, local resident :-) https://m.stacker.news/47738
As a kid, our Irish Setter had separate (unplanned!)litters with both a Rotti and a Coonhound. Both litters produced great dogs.
Way to go.. Mastiff is part for sure.. they are amazing dogs but they shit like cows..
Yupp, they are bigger, better and healthier than any other dog breed.
I had a Tibetan Mastiff at our farm house in the mountains. It weighed 50+ Kilograms in its youth.
Also, Tibetan Mastiffs are the only breed that remain as the direct descent from wolves.
If I recall they also produce similar quantities of methane.
Probably, but you dont have to pick methane from your backyard ๐
I have my shovel propped up against the garage. My Staffy is no slouch either.
Haha, you are prepared then I had like 10 or more dogs. Always rescued or adopted. Its a great joy.
It is great therapy for me. It also forces you to be far less sedentary
For sure makes you active. My last two where a German Shepherd and a Mastiff. But they both died of old age. We are now waiting our kids to get a bit older so we can go get a new adopted dog.
Beautiful pooch. What did you name her?
Keep us posted on the training progress.
Thanks! We're not settled on a name yet. Suggestions welcome!
If I think of something I will let you know but my son named our dog and I call her by everything except her name. I think that dog has about 12 nicknames.
Our cat has about 10 nicknames too.
Haha yeah my cat had a lot of nicknames as well.
Aww! I love it when a dog makes it clear right away that she knows she's met her human. Our dog (a chihuahua we adopted from a shelter when she was four) was supposedly shy and not eating much, but the second she was in our house, she was all over us and will eat nearly anything she can get her paws on.
Looking forward to more pics and seeing how she continues to adjust (and wishing her luck with her spaying).
I've heard lots of stories like this. Sometimes they just need a change of environment, and kennels are stressful places for dogs and people.
Congrats for your new puppy!
congrats! that's a wonderful story, and welcome home to your pup!
Thanks very much!
For the most part of my life, I've had female dogs and apart from many other things, I like that they are healthier than the male ones. They aren't as prone to diseases as male dogs are.
How about calling her 'Trixie'?
We settled on Cassie. I have had mostly female dogs also. I seem to prefer them too.
Cassie is also a wonderful name. Because you and I both love dogs, I think we should exchange our experiences about them more often.
For my part, I can suggest you a lot of home remedies and easy pet care solutions. Also, I have a cousin @DoctorD who is a vet and if required anytime I can connect you with him as well.
Very good idea! I didn't know SN had a veterinarian as a member!
I've told him about SN and he joined but as he's just about completing his Post Graduate, he's busy studying. However, he liked SN so much that he had promised me to be a full time on SN once he completes his PG. We also have mutual plans of opening a Vet Hospital and a kennel.
Congrats on the new family addition. I hope everyone adjusts well!
Oh man, this sounds like a treat! Im sure everything will go well, you were in the right place at the right time to get the dog you needed :)
She came with a Bitcoin uplift. Beautiful dog. What's her name?
Thanks. Her name is Cassie
