I would definitely recommend prioritizing implementing some way to persist state, even if it’s just in local or session storage. It’d be super nice to be able to come back to the puzzle later without having to start over.

This is super hard because there aren't that many lines so if you are unsure of one you can't work it out by figuring out other lines across or down.

Yeah, as it turns out, it’s REALLY hard to make an easy crossword. Either the words end up being high vocab or you have a real hard time getting good intersections.
